It appears that I will need to make a gear puller to get the gear off. Anyone with a suggestion on how go about this?

Will this gear be a real tight fit? Could a person be able to use two pry bars and get it to slide off?

Thank you SDE

Take it to your local auto machine shop and have them press it off. They can press on a new gear too. Hal

All we ever do is put a gear puller on it and then heat it slightly and they come right off. It may be possible you can heat more and it would fall off but I am fearful of removing temper out of the crankshaft so I always err on the side of caution.

Will a small butane torch get hot enough to get it off?

Nope, the butane torch will not get hot enough, and you don't want any heat on it anyhow. Go to town and invest some money into the proper puller. They are pricey, but you only have to buy it once, and the puller will be less expensive than replacing the gear after you break it with the pry bars.
