I finally got it-unstuck M

After a lot of persistence, patience, and advice from you all and others, I was finally able to get the engine unseized. After letting the cylinders soak in ATF for a couple of weeks with no success, I finally picked up some Butyl Celusolve from the CAT dealer in town. I let that
soak for about three days and then I did something that I hadn't done before. An "old" mechanic friend recommended I pull the starter and try to make rotation there. So I did this and didn't get any movement turning it clockwise, but put a bunch of torque on it counterclockwise and it started to move, more and more everytime I rotated it through. Prior to doing this, I jacked up one side and had a big 4 x 4 timber shoved in the wheel to torque on. So I don't know what combination of events contributed to the success, but the important part is it is "UNSTUCK"! Thank you to everyone who helped me on this project- you saved me alot of money, I think. Until my next blunder..... ..

I got it started last night and it runs better than it did before this happened. I guess I got lucky this time. The only thing I'm puzzled about is the foot/starter switch. I put a brand new one in and on occasion it starts to breathe a little smoke like its drawing too much amperage. Like I said a brand new switch and this is happening. I'm wondering if my cables are damaged after all of the screwing around I've done to get this tractor going. Or maybe I just bought an inferior switch from Fleet Farm.

CAUTION; you need to pull the plugs on this engine and get a bore scope to look inside. In fact, I think it would be in your best interest to pull the head off this engine for a good inspection before you try to fire it up! If a bunch of junk has accumulated in these cyliders, or even one of them, you are in for big trouble, and, you certainly can discover whether or not you have bent anything. It would be good to have the valves ground and seated while you have it off.

AND, just because you got the pistons to go up and down DOES NOT mean that the rings are not stuck and goobered up and they probably are!!

Before starting it you should check the valves. Are any of them stuck? If any are stuck, you will have already bent the rockerarm over that valve. Not a big deal, but it will not run very smoothly.

George is right, start it up and see what happens. Might not need a thing. Our F-12 was stuck when we got it. Fired it up after freeing it up and ran like a dream.

If it does seem to smoke a little, hook it up to a plow, a disc or something that will really make it work, and let er work hard for about 20 mins to a half hour. If any rings were a little tight, they won't be after a good work out. We have always done this and really works good. Doug

Does anyone think it is necessary to tear the engine down to inspect? This engine just locked up recently due to rain water leaking in through the exhaust manifold. It "has not" been sitting in the shelterbelt out back getting froze up. This just happened over a short period of time. I dumped the oil out to get the water out of the pan and then I couldn't get it started again, so I mistakenly walked away from it for a couple of weeks and that is when I discovered it was locked up. Been working on freeing it up ever since and now I finally got it free. Thanks.

Start it and run it and if you get a lot of smoke, run it some more, and put it under load. Run a little MMO or ATF in the fuel to help unstick the rings. It will heal.

Steven, start it and see how it runs. If you get a lot of smoke and or oil consumption, then tear it down. I would suspect that it may need sleeves and rings. A good honing may do it. Might not need anything.
