Since there is no neutral position in the speed transmission, what I usually do is put the transmission in fourth gear. That is all the way forward with the front shift fork. Make sure the other fork is positioned so that the first/second sliding gear is not engaging either first or second gear on the bottom shaft. Rotate the shift cam on the cover so that it it is the fourth gear position. Set the cover down so that the front fork roller engages the cam. Keep the cover slightly lower in the front so the roller stays engaged in the cam. Then, using a long, narrow screwdriver, move the rear fork a little forward or backward until the roller engages and the cover drops down. Be careful not to damage the gasket when moving the fork with the screwdriver.
