It very well may be true that most TA failures are caused by abuse but for whatever reason most of the tractors you find with early mechanical TAs have TA problems.

The best way of maintaining a TA is to make sure it is in proper adjustment and do not use it as a slowing down device. Do not let it free wheel much and keep good clean oil in the rear end. It is designed to get through tough spots in the field when the gear you are using is just to fast or bogging down a little. As in plowing or any ground engaging tool. It is not meant to haul a big load of hay over a hill. On the newer hydraulic TA's it doesnt matter as they will hold back going over hill.

I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I think if you figure out what you need: engine power, gearing (TA?), pto (live or not), power steering or not, etc. then find out what is out there. The weaknesses seem to be the result of the use, maintenance and care the tractor has had.
I have a 300u with no TA, power steering and a loader. I like the tractor a lot and it fits my needs well. I have done a lot of tinkering, but nothing major. A weakness of this tractor with a loader is the steering gearbox. Luckily, mine has been replaced with a heavier one (for a 340 or 460) that is in very good shape. Also reported to be a bear to steer without power steering, if it has a loader.

300 and 350 are just more powerful Hs with TA, live hydraulics, and live PTO.

400 and 450 are just more powerful Ms with TA, live hydraulics and live PTO.

They would have the same "weaknesses" as Hs and Ms, respectively. In other words, no particular weaknesses. Some may regard the TA as a weakness, but that's because they don't know how to use or adjust a TA. Properly used and maintained, a TA will last forever. It's only when doofuses pull the TA while going downhill in front of a loaded wagon, or don't keep it adjusted, that there are problems.

Unfortunately 90% of the 300,350,400, and 450's out there have been owned by knuckleheads in the past and have these problems.

That may be true, but I have a 350 and 666 that have the original TA's in them and they work as good now as they did when I got them. I am the second owner of both tractors and have never had any trouble with them. The 666 has a little over 7000 hours on it and I don't know how many is on the 350 because the tach cable was broken when I got it. It has since been fixed and is showing 5300 hours. The old gentlemen I got it from said the tach had been broken for 10 years, but he put around 800 hours per year on it, so that is a bunch. 12 or 13000 is not out of reason.
