This will be a long post but I must give as much info as I can so that someone can help me easier. My W400 diesel will not start and run on gas after it has sat over night, it is getting lots of fuel to the carb, and it smokes a whole lot, fires and tries to run but will not run as it should. Naturally smokes more with more choke, but that doesnt help. However when the tractor has been running on diesel I can switch it over to gas to shut it off and most of the time it will run fine, but still smokes alot at times. Hope this helps long winded I know just trying to give all the info.

Thank you gentlemen for your time and brain power. I do have an I.T. Shop manual for this tractor and have looked at the starting sytem linkage adjustments in the manual, and on the tractor and all seem to be ok. However what throws me for a loop is how once the engine is warm the tractor starts on gas and JUST ABOUT runs flawlessly, I guess I was just hoping for that magic fix all answer. You know the one?

there is a manifold wire that is insulated on the start on gas diesels. could be that is grounding out. oem has the service kit for around 9.00, has all the insulators and bushings.

George has a good point, I would also check the plugs, they are special, and in almost all cases, the use of the correct (wierd) plug makes a difference. All the linkage needs to be set correctly for the intake butterflys, and switchover stuff. If the butterflys are not correct, it will be difficult to start. JimN

Jim, you and glennster are both correct about the other things. All these are critical in proper starting and operation of these tractors. Boils down to the book. I can not stress enough the importance of having manuals for every piece of equipment that one has. It take away lots of guess work and dought. Have a good one.

Sounds like it is flooding. You need to take the carb apart and give it a good cleaning and adjust your float. It may need a new needle and or seat. Carb kits are available for it. I assume it has the F-8 carb. OEM has parts. 1-800-283-2122
