I went to put a spare pto cover on my new to me m and the dam thing was too small! i never paid much attention to that but i dint think they would of had a seperate size for the h and the M. you would of thought they would made them the same size, its not like there is any advantage to having 2 diffrent sizes. just my $.02

The cover from steering gear for M will fit PTO opening if that will help.

I'd have been more surprised if it had fit.
You wouldn't expect a PTO cover from a C to fit an H, so why would you expect an H cover to fit an M?

This was back in the day when they made two different size tractors for two different horsepower levels. The H is a much smaller tractor, so it has a smaller mounting base for the PTO shield.

In fact, the H shield is TOTALLY different. It's much longer than an M shield, because the tractor is smaller, but they both have the same axle-to-PTO-to-drawbar distances. You would never be happy with an H PTO shield on an M. Every time you turned short, you'd hit and bend the shield or the PTO shaft...

Nowadays, they make one tractor, turn the injector pump up in one, put a different number on the hood, call it a "bigger" tractor, and charge extra for it! Now THAT is bogus.

Transmissions are different, PTO's are different, rear housing is different, thus the shields have to be different, as they bolt to the PTO housing.
