OK, I posted before about this and got alot of great comments. Unfortunately, I have not been able to figure out where the level check for transmission fluid is. Some told me it is on the right side of the gear box (as you sit on the tractor) down by the brake pedal, a square plug that I should be able to get my finger in. The only plug that size is on the top of the deck just to the right of the vertical steering column where your right foot would be. It uses a 3/4 inch drive to get it open. The only thing I find on the right side is what appears to be a small bleeder valve on the bottom of the circular brake cover. Mine is a 1950 M. Could it be different that the others that have been mentioned here? Oh, my owners manual is on its way. Thanks

Found it, Thank you both. I thought that one was too far forward for transmission fluid BUT I was mistaken, obviously. Suggestions for correct type of fluid?

Most people use either 90wt or 85-140.
That plug checks the level for the transmission and rear end. There are two drain plugs, one for the transmission not far from the check plug and one at the far back, under the pto. The fill plug next to the shifter fills both. The M takes about thirteen gallons. That'll be a little sticker shock. While it's drained and the rear plug is out is a good time to do a quick health checkup - take one of those little magnet-on-a-stick things and run it around inside, see if there's any metal chunks.

Good luck, Wm

I use Case IH 85-140. I like this type due to the fact that its thickness slows the gears down which makes shifting all the much better.

The Bolt at the bottom of the brake housing is a support adjuster for the brake band inside the tin housing. It supports the brake band and is not tight when correct. The plug to check the trans is on the clutch side in front of the brake housing. JimN

Must have been a misunderstanding. Or someone suffering from the same whole-world dyslexia that gets me sometimes.
The check plug is on your LEFT as you sit on the seat. Next to the clutch pedal. The big plug on top with the 3/4 drive is the fill plug. Good luck, Wm

I used a gallon of Lucas in my 51 M and it seems to smooth out the 85-140. Sticker shock is the word of the day. Prices took off with the gasoline. 16 gallon is about right. 3 5gallon pails and 1 gal of Lucas.
