I have a 400 Diesel that likes to smoke kinda bad (white not black)no matter if its at idle or running at PTO speed or working. We talked to a guy that said that people were good at taking the thermostat out so we checked and there was not one to be found so we blocked the radator to let her run hot but she still smoked. if someone could lend me some knolage it would be much ablodged.

Take her out and pull the stuffings out of her.
Sounds like you been too easy on her and she is loaded up.
Hang a 10' disc on it and sock it in to the axle.

could it be that valves on the gas portion not be closing and the way? in turn not having enough compression to burn fully.

Actually, these will run with the starter valves stuck open, but are very hard to start and have little power. Is your pump timing set correctly?

It will not run at all on any cylinder with a stuck Compressin release valve. If it is hitting on all four, that is not it. The white smoke will be puffing with the missing cyl, not continuous. JimN

Hi Jim,

Well, I had one that did run with a starter valve stuck fully open and did not miss after it warmed up. Maybe your experience has been different.

Contaminated oil with diesel fuel in it, or very old oil will burn easily, and smoke. If it starts well, and only needs a minute on gas to transfer to diesel well, I would suspect poor oil 15-40 rotella, or delo oil are top brands. Has it been worked hard, or is it mostly a toy low use tractor. Working them (with good oil can reduce smoke. Valve guides can also be an issue, But If all else fails, putting a set of sleeves and pistons in it may be the answer. Or live with it. JimN

White smoke means it isn't firing right; missing on one or more cylinders.

Who knows with one that old? Maybe rebuild time?
