We are having the same issue of an earlier post (by Brian in MA) on the timimg. We are a tdc and the rotor is pointing at the #1 lug, all we get is a pop.
Followed instructions posted by EL TORO, still get just a single pop.
Anybody have any instructions on how to time it.
Our cub is 1961, it has a distributor, when you all speak of removing the magneto, what are you referring to?

Are you sure you are not 180 degrees off with your distributor?

When they removed the mag they pulled the mag from the engine. Since your rotor is at No1 your distributor is probably in time. You need to make sure you are getting good fire to the sparkplugs and fuel to the engine. Pull one of the plug wires off one of the sparkplugs and hold the plug wire near the sparkplug and have someone to make an attempt to start the tractor. Should get a hot spark out of the plug wire. If there's good fire to the plug hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor while some cranks over the engine. There should be good suction on your hand since manifold vacuum is required to pull the atomized fuel into the engine. You need to check your plug wiring from the distributor to the sparkplugs. They need to be connected in firing order of the engine. That rotor rotates CW
your wires should be in this order.
2-1
4-3

When was the last time this tractor was running?
Hal

we have gas and spark. the engine was stuck when we got it. we rebuilt the engine. Set the plugs, the valves to proper settings etc.....
checked the wires over and over again.I read a post that said if the engine was tight we might need to try pulling it. Other than that we are stumped. We"ll keep trying.

When you had the engine torn down did you have the
camshaft and crankshaft out of the block? I was thinking about the timing marks. There's another way to check to see if everything is in time. When you have No1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke your valves on that cylinder should be closed and the rotor should be at the No1 plug tower. I would go through that one more time. Hal
