quick question on 12v conversion

when converting from the factory 6v pos ground to 12v neg ground, how does one addres the polarity of the starter? I know permenant magnet motors are polarity sensitive (reverse polarity reverses motor direction. The startes are not permenant magnet motors, so do they rotate the same way regardless of the polarity?
This summer I'm going to do a conversion. maybe sooner, when I get the time and ambition to fab up a mounting bracket.
Also, I'd like to add a smaller pulley to increase rev to the alternator. Not sure how to go about doing it as the serpentine pulley on this alternator has no keyway and itsnt tapered, its just held on like a washer would be when tightened by a nut. I'll figure something out I suppose.

JayW - Not to worry! Farmall starters are "series wound" and therefore are polarity insensitive - they'll spin the right direction grounded either way.

Delco alternator sheaves (pulleys) are easily swapped - just remove the nut and it should slide off the shaft. You can look check at an alternator shop for a smaller diameter sheave. Or if you have access to a lathe, chuck the sheave and cut it in half at the bottom of the "V". Then insert one or two flat washers between the two halves when you remount it. This will reduce the sheave pitch diameter (ie. make it "smaller") so the alternator will spin faster.

the original is a serpentine pulley, or I'd do as you suggested. I'll figure something pout. I plan to do a little fab up on a bracket and keep the battery and wireing uninstalled and check out how the alternator does just in case it doesnt like the rpm. I usually have my tractor at about 1000rpm when working with it, unless I'm dismounted for a hile, then I idle her down to about 600.

A starter with field coils will turn the same.

Don't forget to change tohe polarity on your ignition coil if you have dist. ignition.

yep well aware of that. For my test its basically going to be 2 electrical systems. The tractor as it is now minus the generator, will run off battey, then the alternator wires to the battery and with a switch and diode for testing purposes. Then I'll fab up a better brakcet and redo the wiring if I'm happy with the results. I'll be sure to put a load on the battery to check out how the alternator does under load.
right now im more worried about fitment under the hood. Tomorrow ill do some measure and stuff.
