I just purchased a M Farmall today. The serial number plate shows FBK 132672 XI. Can one of you Farmall fellows tell me what this tells you about the tractor such as year model and maybe anything thing else. Is it a Super M or maybe a MTA or just a plain ole M? Jack

If it has a cable operator it is a Behlen. the cable enters the trans thru the second bolt down on the right side.about 1/3 way thru the trans, the cable connects to a linkage arm that pivots on a special pin that replaces the pin holding the reverse counter shaft in place. Where the cable enters the trans there is a small compression nut. It threads on the outside of the cable, the bolt is tapt for the outside of the nut,This locks the cable in place and seals from oil leakage The pulley drive gear is replaced with a double gear, one original one with about 15 more teeth, the inside of these gears have .8 square dog drive, two pins run thru the gears for shiftlng Heisler also made a 9 speed,it has hard linkage into the left side, MandW used hard linkage on the right side, With standard rear tires they all gave speeds of 7 9 12 15 mph

I dont know about that I have never seen a M with two speed rear end. The MTA had a torque amplifier that gave it high and low range on the transmission. It could have a M&W 9 speed. I dont have one so I dont know anything about those. but someone here will. Good Luck

Hi , You have a plain gas M . Year 1947 . The X1 tells you it's a gas only engine . The FBK tells it's a M . You should find casting codes on the main frame and the platform top with the last numbers being 47 or 1947 . I don't know if all '47 year tractors showed the date but the ones I have seen do . It's the only year that didn't always use a letter code from what I've been told . Have fun with it ! ...Randy

Jack, if you type in M farmall in the Search For box above, you will be inundated with the good stuff. Welcome to the board. The serial # list to the left will show you what you were told below. JimN

I have been told that it has a 2 speed rear end. How can I confirm if it does?

It should have a lever or cable pull on it . The cable would be mounted to the right of the steering support and if it's a M&W the lever would be also . If it's a Heisler the lever would be on the left side but that's just a guess . My M has a M&W ( by the way it's called a 9-speed ) cable shift . I'm not familiar with the Heisler setup so someone else might have to answer that one . Either way it gives the tractor 4 more speeds between 4th and 5th gears . It also speeds up the pto speed . ...Randy

If it has a accessory gear set, it will have a lever or cable to control the gears. Several companies made what are called 9 speeds. They have the original five speeds in the trans, and an additional 4 more between 4th and fifth. They are kinda cool but not terrably useful because 90% of tillage is done at less than 4th gear speeds. JimN

The gentleman that I bought it from said that is had the 9 speed but the cable was froze up so he just removed it and the lever. Without the lever and cable is there a way I can identify if it really does? Also if it does where can I get the lever and cable? jack

If it has the 9 speed you would be wise to make it operational again. It gives you 4 speeds between the regular 5 3/8 mph 4th gear and the 16 5/8 mph 5th or "road gear". Not having any gears with speeds between 4th and 5th was one of the more serious deficiencies of a Farmall M...most competitive models of tractors of this size had a gear or two faster than the M's 4th and slower than the M's 5th. These speeds were real nice for some light field jobs and road work. The "Super" series of the Farmall letter tractor models had better speeds for field and road work even though they(except for the Super MTA model)had only 5 speeds too. I know about this because I have many years of experience operating Farmall letter series and Super letter series tractors.

Remove cover in rear of belley pump, look at top bolt on right side of tractor up inside that holds clutch housing to transmission and see if its non original.Cable passes through center of it on M&W cable shifted.Remove belt pulley gear box or cover plate and look in transmission for the M&W parts. Find a diagram of parts first so you know what to look for.

Ask for SKK , He has pictures he can post of the internals . One way to tell is if there's a small hole just to the rear and below the belly pump fill opening in the transmission tunnel ( torque tube ) on the right side . The hole would be verticle or slightly forward of verticle . This is where the cable entered the clutch area . Then it goes through a hollow dowel with a clamp on the outside to hold it in position into the transmission . Hope this helps . ...Randy

If he said it it more than likely does. There are components in the small cover behind the belly pump in the bottom of the tractor. These would be internal levers, and attachment points for the cable. Others can help with details, and possible pics. JimN
