Hey guys and gals , I'm getting fed up trying to put the rubber lens protector in the guide lights . I've tried a number of different ways but none is easy . Is there a easy way ? My arthritic hands can't hold all the parts and swing the ring around without losing the rubber gasket . I've also tryed putting the lens into the ring with the gasket first -that didn't work either . Any help ? ...Randy

Hi Sorry I didn't note the type . It's on a old teardrop Guide combination or head light from the letter series tractors . You have the reflector , the lens , the gasket around the lens with the fin pointing towards the reflector then the ring that holds it all together . I took apart and repaired my switch got the reflectors nickle plated , beadblasted the housings and rings and repainted them , got new gaskets from IH ( that may be my worst mistake ) washed and polished the lens and just cleaned up and polished the red jewel . I got the combination light together and it's all good and works great but it was a bear to do ! I still have two headlights to put together though . That's the reason for the question . Just seems like there ought to be a easier way than the ways I did it . I double nutted the stem ( post ) and clamped it in a vise with the light pointing up after I got all the wiring done and the reflector put in and attached and everything worked , then putting the lens and the gasket on with the ring around it all just took me about an hour of the gasket rolling over every time I tried slipping the ring over it or just plain coming off the lens . I expanded the ring as far as I felt comfortable and then some . I tried running the ring around from one side . I tried putting the ring and lens together with the gasket then putting it all on the light . None of those ways seemed easier than the other . I got it but how do YOU do it ? If you tell me you won't have to kill me will you ? HA- HA . Thanks ...Randy

Don't know exactly what you are working on? If by chance you got the rubber gaskets from A&I, those will not interchange into an original "Guide" headlamp. They will only fit the aftermarket reproductions from India or wherever.

Hi Rusty , No I tried some of those and found that out last spring when I started this project . I got soft ones from IH . I looked at the ones Korves Oliver sells and liked them but I don't know how they work . They are a firmer gasket than the ones from IH . They looked just like the ones from IH . By the way , if you want to have some reflectors plated I can get them done for about 30-35 bucks apiece plus shipping - less for more pieces . I know that's kind of expensive but they are NICE and BRIGHT with the light burning . And they are OEM . Take care ...Randy

I can sell you brand new reflectors for about $10 to $12 each. Can't tell them apart from the originals.

Hi Rusty , I got one of those aftermarket reflectors . It is shaped almost the same and is of good quality by today's standards but it still doesn't compare with the original for weight and feel . It'll do the job it was intended to do though . I just like to keep the old stuff if it can be saved . Those old ones are made with a brass base metal and the new one feels light by comparison and is chrome plated . Where I got mine nickle plated they polished it to a mirror finish , I don't know yet if that's good or not so good but it sure does look pretty ! It almost looks like a spot beam in the basement hooked to my motorcycle battery . I've got two more headlight reflectors to get re-plated sometime . The other two I had done were combo rear light with the red dot hole in them . Take care ! ...Randy

For what it's worth, originally those lights did not use a rubber gasket. It was more like a soft permatex gasket maker in a tube. Kind of like silicon.

Every old lite i have ever taken apart had the rubber gasket and it is even listed on parts stuff you must have got some that they used the gooy stuff instead of the rubber gasket. All older tractors using the guide lites used the rubber gasket millions of them were that way.

I have also taken apart several of the old Guide lights. Never found a rubber gasket in any of them, only just the permatex goo that had hardened.

My parts book shows a gasket . But someone like you mentioned must have used something other than a gasket or used carb cleaner on the light to clean it and melted the gasket . Still wondering how all you guys hold it all together to slip the molding ring around it without displacing the gasket ? Thanks ...Randy

Hi , That explains the hard black tar like substance I had to remove from the edge of the lenses . I just thought it was 5o year old rubber gasket material . Makes me wonder if windshield sealant wouldn't work like that ? Vaseline up the inside of the molding ring and the fluted parts of the lens and run a bead around the ring , insert the lens and cut it clean when it's cured ? I MIGHT try that with a rusted out housing I have to see if I can figure out how to make it work . Thanks ! ...Randy

Using rubber cement for paper, "glue" the rubber on first (coat the rubber and part, like contact cement, and let dry. Then put the rubber on in the correct location. THis will (hopefully) solve the problem while allowing removal later. Repositionalble spray cement also works. JimN

Hi , That sounds like it would do it but with my fat little fingers I'd have the stuff dripping from what little hair I have left in no time (8-) Thanks ! ...Randy
