Hello,

Tore the front steering down on my "53 SM and was disapointed to find that the steering gear is only half a gear. I was hoping I could rotate the gear 180 degrees when I rebuild to take up some of the slop. What years did they have the full round gear? Does anyone make new ones? What are the steps to take to get all the slop out of the front end? I plan on doing a full rebuild.

Thanks,

Mark

!st. to try is to tighten nut on end of steering wheel shaft at the gearbox. Do not over-tighten. Refer to I & T service manual. Also consider replacing bushings in steering shaft & bolster shaft befor buying new gears. Also 4 bolts at bottom of bolster shaft are tight & check wheel bearings. If wide front there will be a few more wear points. Armand

Case IH shows the full circle gear to be available part no. 50037DB. I would guess it will VERY pricey.

these came out with the 400's. they are on ebay most of the time. i wouldn't think that you could ever wear one out. there are six splines so you have six settings because the only place that they waer are the teeth that are engaged with the worm in the straight ahead position.
