In addition to the good info below, I'll add that instructions that came with sleeves I've used indicated the freezing of the sleeve, and warming of the block as a means of easing the installation. There are several pics of sleeve pullers in the archives (all very easy to make) with pretty common materials. (I would not use a sealant on a sleeve (unless directed by a manufacturer, and only the one recommended) due to the difficulty of removing the sleeve the next time. I have never used a sealant type material. Heat conductive silicone is fine if applied in a very thin film. Clean the groove at the top deck to assure full entry into the bore. Many hair pulling teeth gnashing fits have occurred when the sleeve was broken by pounding on it in the last 2". The letters stamped next to the bores on the block indicate relitive machined diameter A being smallest, and D being biggest. These were used by IH to select fit the sleeves. Issues sometimes occur with C and D holes being too large for a replacement sleeve. The loose sleeve will definitely break and ruin the engine. If it slides in by hand (when they are the same temperature (before chilling etc.)they are loose, and either a larger one is needed, or (if you are lucky) swapping them between holes will find a good matchup. It is an issue that is not to be ignored. Very best of luck, I hope I helped. JimN

To Install dry sleeves:

Thorougly clean cylinder block bore and counterbore removing all carbon and foreign matter, wipe O.D. of sleeve; then use glycerine, stoddard solvent or other light sealing lubricant between sleeve and cylinder block bore.

CAUTION: SLEEVE MUST ENTER APPROXIMATELY HALF-WAY INTO BLOCK BY "PALM OF HAND" PRESSURE. IF IT DOES NOT, IT IS NECESSARY TO HONE THE BLOCK TO OTAIN PROPER FIT. THIS IS IMPORTANT SINCE A FORCE FIT WOULD DECREASE THE INSIDE DIAMETER OF THE SLEEVE RESULTING IN INSUFFICIENT PISTON TO CYLINDER CLEARANCE.

After installing halfway by hand pressure, us a good sleeve puller to complete installation. If no sleeve puller is available, cover the entire top of sleeve with hard wood lock and tap lightly with mallet to set in place.

I do not suggest that you use the heat on the block and the cold on the sleeves. Should be installed at ambient temperature.

Installing a dry sleeve does differ from a wet sleeve. A dry sleeve should be installed with a sleeve adhesive/sealant as it improves the heat transfer to the engine block. For ease of installation put the sleeves in the freezer and have the block warm. For what its worth, thats how we do it. Dave

The process is the same. Pull them and replace them. The only difference that I can see is that the wet sleeves have the seals and the dry do not.

Make a note that I have 2 new old stock sleeves, pistons and rings...if you can come up with two more somewhere.

Tom what is the part # on the kit these sleeves and pistons came out of? Are they flattop or firecrater pistons?

I will check PN tomorrow and get back with you. They are not flat top. I do not know the difference between step and Fire Crater. I will get the details and post a picture to show the top of the pistons.
