i am stuck in reverse. the shifter will shift into other gears, but when you left off of the clutch in any gear other than neutral, the tracter dies.
the neutral position is actually in reverse.

so when the tracter is in neutral, i can go in reverse. all other gears including the reverse position, the tracter seizes up. ]

can someone help me out?

thanks,

james

Had similar problem with an IAA. Someone else had tried to fix but got the shift fork in wrong. I took the top off the tranny and visually slid the gears until they were in neutral. I put the fork slides in the neutral detent and put the cover back on. Had to do it twice to get the forks into the slots correctly without binding the gears. Problem was the same as the prior post and this one. The end of the gear shift wears out and jumps out of the slide leaving that one in gear. I found a used gear shifter that was OK and dropped that in. Works perfectly now.

block the wheels so it cant roll away leaving a little clearence in the blocks and tie the clutch lever down to release the pressure on the tranny and the shifter rails will move much easier.

James sounds to me like your shifter has sliped out of shifting rails. If that is the case you will need to remove shifter alighn rails into neutral position and reinstall shifter. The end of the shifters wear from 50 plus years of use but they can be rebuilt. This is one possibility.

Hi. We have a similarshifting problem with a '53 SC. We had removed the deck to replace bull gear and axle and when we replaced the deck & shifter we can't get the gears to function properly. Particularly getting to reverse. How did you fare and what was the trick?
Thanks, Ed.

Same topic a few days ago except with a H. Drive the pin out of the shift leaver. Using a big screw driver realign the shifting rails. Only takes a few minutes. Rebuild shifting leaver to prevent from happening again.

thanks guys.

i got in first gear and up into the barn. my only problem now is even using a giant screw driver, i still cant get into a perfect neutral. it is scratchy and the looking at the gears visually, they don't line up perfectly.

any ideas?

thanks,

james

Try rocking tractor a little while holding pressure on rail. Dont give up they should line up.

georgeky,

i applied pressure as i was moving forward in gear. still wouldn't budge. just needs to go about 1/8 should i raise the rear and really have someone jerk the wheel back and forth?

Back and forth is what I meant. You should be able to do it by hand . Have you ever got it in neutral. Dont force things to much. They should slide into right position. Maybe something else is binding but Im not sure what it might be.

i pulled the top off and found a aluminum or pot metal ring jammed in the reverse gears. the part number on the broken ring reads ih 354643-r11.

alittle investigation said that this gear is an oil slinger and is only necessary when the pto is being used while standing still. can you confirm this information, or do i need to pull the trans apart and replace.

if you or anyone has an opinion, i would appreciate it.

thanks,

james
