I bought a 'like new' JD 'G' today but when I got it home it wouldn't start. Had to pull-start it the 544. :-)

Bought my grandsons a Ford 8n that size, they always
had to tow it to start it with a green one, just
like the big one out in the yard.

Back in late 1950s, Dad owned a '52 JD G. We called it the "3 hr. tractor". When under load with a plow or disk, it would run out of gas at the 3 hr mark...darn near on the exact minute. Good thing it had that 1 gal. reserve tank, if we were within 1 mi of the gas barrel at home we could make it back to refuel. Traded if for SMTA; talk about night and day!

3 hour tractor sounds about right. Met a guy a few years ago who claimed that his dad farmed with three G model John Deeres. One working in the field, one coming in for fuel, and one going out with a full tank of fuel.

Why do Deere's burn so much fuel? In the early 90's, I had a 2555 which was a good tractor but every four hours it needed fuel.
