I have 2 fine IH 140's, 1968 & 1974. Both have 12V neg Grnd, distributors, and Alt/Volt Reg's. I would like to upgrade to alternators and electronic ignitions. What is the best way, best parts, etc. Comments as to whether this is a good idea or not are also welcomed.

I have been unable to keep the generators charging (even after rebuild) for more than about a summer and am tired of dragging the charger out every couple months.

The distributor and points on the '74 model need to be cleaned and reset evry few weeks or it starts missing and backfiring after running it under load for a while. The dist cap doesn't seem to fit tight enough to keep out moisture from rain etc.

Hopefully the upgrades above will cure these headaches. Am I headed in the right direction?

I upgraded my 1963 Farmall 140 to 12v, alternator and electronic ignition about 10 years ago. It is definitely the right way to go and you will be very happy with the results.

Electronic ignition is an easy upgrade, works great, and is very reliable. No more fiddling with the points. Upgrade kits are available if you search around.

Installing the Delco 10Si alternator is fairly easy. You may need to find or fabricate a new top and bottom brackets to attach alternator. Search the archives for threads regarding 12V conversion and it will give you the directions for upgrading to an alternator.

Good luck. Let me know if you want pictures of the brackets and will email them to you.

J.

Edit: Both have distributors now, not Alt. Upgrade would be to Alternators.

Here you go for the alternator part... Delco 10SI internally-regulated alternator, commony used in 19:75-1985 Chevy pickups:

Thanks. That was quick.

Hopefully there are instructions for this.
Is the diode soldered to the wire?
What is a juction block? Is this the charge guage?
Will this fit under the hood?
Do I have to modify brackets?
What do I do with all the existing wires around the generator and voltage regulator?

You can use crimp connectors on the diode leads or solder them. Then, cover the diode with 2 laters of heat shrink tubing.

If desired, an "idiot light" with a # 194 lamp, or equivalent is a direct substitute for the diode.

My picture is generic... the large output lead needs to get to the ammeter. You can splice it to the wire NOW attached to the "BATT" terminal on the voltage regulator, or you can run the new wire all the way to the ammeter.

The existing wires that will not longer be used can be taped up and out of the way.

If the full-sized alternator is physically too large, some guys are using Hitachi alternators, which connect up in a similar manner.

Bracket "mods" will be needed, the pulley on the exixting Delco generator will swap to the alternator, if desired, to match the width of the existing pulleys/belt.

This setup, using a standard "3-wire" alternator will "excite" (begin to charge) at a lower engine RPM than the (goofy) one-wire alternators often sold for these conversions.
