I have a gas IH 560. I used it the other day and now it wont start. Its getting gas.It has new wires and plugs...points look good.It started up and while it was warming up it died and wont start.I even tried starting fluid.I have been told to replace the coil. How can i check the coil to see if its bad?? Will any 12 volt coil work ??. This tractor looks very nice but its no good to me not running and there is no one around here I can trust to work on it.. HELP

The idea that all coils are the same is delusional. Ford, G.M., and Chrysler coils all have different resistance values and must be matched with their correct ballast resistors to work properly.

An old automotive book from the 50's said that if all the coils which were thought to be bad were put end to end, they would stretch across the USA. Coils do occasionally go bad, however, it is usually something else. Check the resistor going to the coil & see if it has continuity.

You know, I'm surprised that more people don't know about the old "pull the spark plug and hold it against the block while cranking the engine over to see if you have spark" trick. My father taught me that one when I was a wee lad, and I've been using it ever since.

Troubleshooting a gasoline engine is pretty simple: Air, Fuel, and Fire at the right time.

Air: Usually not a problem unless something really weird happens, especially on these oil bath air cleaners.

Fuel: Wet spark plugs indicate fuel is getting to the cylinders. Fuel at the carburetor is only part of the equation; it has to get into the cylinders to do any god.

Fire: My aforementioned pull the sparkplug and hold it against the block trick is appropriate here. You can do something similar with the coil wire, just hold it 1/4" away from the block to create a gap for the spark to jump. You want a strong blue spark, not a weak yellow one. For replacement, a 12V coil is a 12V coil the world around.

Timing: Pull the distributor cap and have someone crank the engine momentarily. If the rotor doesn't spin, you've got serious internal engine problems.

Pull the plug in the #1 cylinder (front), put your thumb over it and have a helper bump (not crank) the engine until the pressure starts blowing out around your thumb. Now go around to the other side and look at the front pulley for a mark. Line that mark up with the pointer on the block. You are now at top dead center on the firing stroke for the #1 cylinder. Pull the distributor cap again. The metal tab on the rotor should be right underneath the terminal for the #1 cylinder.

If you use this 12 volt coil from NAPA 1C14SB no ballast resistor is required. Hal

Will that mean I will have to disconnect the ballast resister thats on the 560 ?? or just change the coils from whats on it to a NAPA 1c14sb.. Thanks

One thing I forgot to mention was how the engine will start with a defective resistor. While cranking voltage bypasses the resistor and feeds voltage to the coil. The engine will start for a moment, then die when the cranking stops. Hal

You would not use the old ballast resistor. One thing that may change your mind about this 1C14SB coil from NAPA is the cost. The price is almost $40.00. Hal
PS: When a ballast resistor is defective the engine will usually start while cranking, then die
when the cranking is stopped. Run a separate wire from the battery to the coil and see if the engine will start. I would clean those points as I outlined in a previous posting. Even new points
need this. Good Luck.

You need to make sure you have voltage at the coil. With the ignition switch in the on position you should have voltage on bothe small terminals on the coil. Use a test lite or volt meter set on DC voltage 15-20 scale. The points need to be open too. If there's no voltage present at the coil you need to check back at the switch to see if voltage is on the terminal that feeds voltage to your coil. These ignition switches are usually fed voltage from small terminal on the starter solenoid. Its usually close to the large battery cable on the solenoid.
If there's no voltage from the switch to the coil
you need to check for voltage from the solenoid to the switch. Run a temporary wire from your battery to the coil and see if the tractor will start. Clean those points with a piece of 320 wet or dry and clean those points and then take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean the points. If you have a good condenser install it.
Then pull that coil wire from the cap and hold it
within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground while someone cranks the engine. Hal

Pull the center wire out of the distubutor cap and hold it close to the block some place. Turn the key on and turn the engine over. You should see a good spark, if you don't then the points maybe bad or slipped out of adjustment. Points can look good but in fact be bad and you can't see that with your eyes.

It could be the coil, but it could be several things. I have had coils go bad, but it could be the condensor, they seem to go more often then the coil. Sometimes a coil will start cold and die after warming up, but when a condensor goes she is dead. You have to do some investigating. Is your distibutor turning? Are you getting fire to your points.

Pull the end of the coil wire out of the distributor and hold it in your hand will cranking it over. If you get a shock it is working.LOL

I really don't know how you check a coil.

have your wife hold a couple of plug wires at the ends,,then you hit the starter,,if she dont wince, scream, or wet herself the coil may be the problem
