cdf: That being the case, the only choice you have is casting date codes.

cdf: I'm missing something here, if the engine is in a Super C, then why would you be trying to find out if it is in fact a Super C.

Is it the engine your and your questioning whether it belongs in the Super C. Well the part number 354898 R1 is indeed a Super C engine block. It is also a Super A engine block after serial number 310300. The only difference in the two applications will be the Super C has 3-1/8" bore sleeves and matching pistons, while the Super A will have thicker wall 3" bore sleeves and matching pistons. If that is what your trying to figure out, shut down the computer and grab the wrenches, as that is the only way your going to find out for certain. Take the head off.

cdf: That engine block part number 354898 R1 came from either a Super A or Super C. That block part number was never cast until mid 1951, and was used on all Super A after serial 310300 and all Super C. The same part number in R3 was used in 100 and 200.

You'll have to find the block date code to be sure which of 51, 52, 53 or 54 the block was cast. That engine may well be in a C now, but it did not come in a C.

5-10-X is the day the part was cast. May 10, 1952.

If most of the major castings on the tractor have a similar date code ending in "X" then it's a safe bet that the tractor was built in 1952.

However, if the major castings have different date codes, you have a "mutt" built from parts tractors.

The number ending in R1 is the part number for the part. That tells you nothing about the date of manufacture.

That may be the block's casting number. The Super C had disc brakes and the brake pedals were curved. Some had the fasthitch too. Hal

I'm not sure about the serial number being from a Super C. It may have came off a Super A. There was only 98000 built so the serial numbers couldn't be that high. It's still the same engine if they used the C123 engine, Hal

354898 r1 is an IH part number. R1 is revision #1

Look on the side of the tool box under the seat for an aluminum plate about 3 inches X 4 inches. It should have the serial number stamped on it. Then click on the "Serial Numbers" link at the left and look up the year.

If it is a 100,000 or higher, it is a Super C, if it is 5 digits or less, it is a Straight C.
