What is the best way, material etc. to clean the inside of gas tank. Tank is in good condition otherwise.

Years ago, I used to clean the varnish out of clear glass kerosene lamps with Lacquer thinner. Just pour it in and it turned to the color of tea and the glass was clean. As you probably know, Lacquer thinner will lift enamel paint and melt the plastic handle of a screwdriver. When I was restoring a old dodge pickup with a varnished up tank, it struck me to try lacquer thinner and it sure worked slick. slosh it around a few times and let it sit then pour it back out. Since then I have used it to clean out varnish in carb, and tanks on several old cars and farm projects.

I recently needed to clean a tank on my H. I have a friend who owns a hardware store and he suggested I use a product called Santeen, white plastic bottle with green writing. It is actually a toilet bowl calcium buildup cleaner a plumber would use to restore the inside of a toilet bowl and is a mild hydrochloric acid solution. I sloshed it around in my tank and let it set for a few minutes and it took everything out of the tank including the rust. I then flushed it out thoroughly with a water hose, then an air hose to get the bulk of the water out, then air dried for a couple of days. Amazing how clean the tank was. I bought it off the shelf for about $7.00. It is an acid, so be careful using it.

Take the tank to a radiator shop. I messed with the tank on an old M for days....rust and varnish. Gave up and took it th eradiator shop and got it fix for little or nothing. Some of the shops can also coat the inside.
