I need to whine..... ..... ..

I ran out of left brake while pushing snow back from the driveway. I had to stand on the pedal whilst pulling on the steering wheel to get any action. So I figured to adjust it. Adjustment was all used up. Pulled the cover, and apparently the band was "over lubricated". I had the band and seal on hand so I decided to fix it properly.

I searched all the posts, and then I finally found a picture of the booger with the differential in the parts book. The good news is that I haven't terminated the casting or bearings (yet), I hope.

That thing is a bear. Got part of the seal out, but still have the shell that is resisting all my efforts so far. I can't seem to deform it enough so it will come out. I've resisted the temptation to use the 4 pound hammer so far.

Is there a secret to getting behind the shell that I haven't discovered yet?

get one of these Seal puller

I got mine, its a craftsman, I go and lookup the number to give you a link, now its not cratfsman, haha. Its 6.99 for the craftsman as well, maybe they are discoontinued. Works great for the price, used mine many many times, saves ALOT of headache. It even works with shaft exposed seals, like on auto transmission output shaft seals, but it is a little tougher to postition.
Its one of those tools when u need it, u need it. Since I work alot on cars, I just had to have it. If You lived close to me, it'd be yours to borrow.

I just broke the housing right off solved the problem knew how to fix it then but I don't recomend my method.

Have you tried a slide hammer yet? Drill a hole into the seal, put a screw and attach to the slide hammer. It's not the best way, but I've managed to pull a few seals using this trick a few times in a few different places. Hope this helps and Good Luck.

You can get violent with the seal, just don't scratch the surface it fits into. Drive a punch into it and pull it out with vise grips. Or, carefully pry it away from the housing enough to get a good grip. You should be able to get a small screw driver somewhat behind it and pry it out also. Take it out in pieces, it doesn't matter.

I sat there for two days getting the right one out on our W6 (which is even worse than a Farmall because you have the non-adjustable wheel and the sheet metal for the platform in your way). To do the left one, I decided there had to be a better way. What I finally did is I rigged something up. I took a 3 jaw puller with the adjustable arms and then reversed them so that their ledges were facing outward. Then I tightened up the puller with the center in the brake shaft and it slid the seal right out. You don't want to tighten the puller too hard and destroy the bearings, but if you are careful and tap on the puller, and keep loosening and tightening it, it will pop loose. Just another way to go about doing it. Best part is that the seal comes out in one piece, and you don't need to worry about chips flying into the rear end or the bearings.

Pat there are a few ways. Some drill little holes in the steel side of the seal and put metal screws in , then you can get a vise grip on and pull. I have good luck with small chisels and punches...get between the tractor casting and the seal with a tiny sharp punch , keep working it intil you begin to collapse the steel shell, knocking it out of round and collapsing it toward its centre point, once you have knocked the seal out of perfect round it loses its integrity and will pull out easily with a vise grip. remember the bearing is directly behind the seal so don't go postal on the chisel or punch..good luck, it sometimes takes a little while

That was my take from all the posts about the darned thing. I've limited myself to a 16 ounce hammer and some old screwdrivers, a center punch, and language that probably heated the shell enough to make it tighter.

Just haven't gotten far enough behind it to force it out of round yet. My levers keep slipping out.

Thankfully we're in a lull between snow storms. Thank goodness I'm not in Oswego, NY! I felt bad about 90 inches over 6 weeks, ain;t nothin'!
