Okay, first the good news.
My F-12 drives around perfect, I took it outside the school shop Monday and drove it around for about 15 minutes, it ran perfect that day, and it was burning nice and clear.

Now the bad news.
Than on Tuesday when i started it, it made black smoke like the diesal engine it isnt. I tried adjusting the carb needle back and forth and to no success. After it had been running about 10 minutes i drove it around for about 20 minutes and eventually the black smoke thinned out and was gone. On Wednesday it started making black smoke again as soon as i started it. I drove it outside to let it sit out back and run for awhile. When i moved the throttle though it just killed and wouldn't start again. Also i noticed that the manifold had cracked at the bottom of the center on the exaust area. Than on Thursday i had to take the sparkplugs out and blow out the cylinders to get it to start. Than when it did it still made black smoke. I tried adjusting the carb again and it still didn't help.

The only reason i can think of for the black smoke is carbon buildup.

Anybody got any other ideas?

Thanks for the help..... ..... ..JJ

JJ,Rice Equ. has new floats,The gas level is very critical on these carbs.Install a new float and use a clear plastic hose to check the gas level. It should be about the same as the writing on the front of the carb

I don't know anything about your tractor but my guess is the manifold is the problem. Probably getting old carbon back into the engine. My tractor did that when I messed with the manifold once.

mix a little oil into the gas see if it helps. 245 massey did that brand new in 76 still does it in 07 if no oil in gas.

Ya it was the float alright. This float has had four holes in it now, patched em all up and it still leaks, so now i guess i begin the search for a better float. Otherwise at this rate the only way to seal it would be to dip the whole float into a pot of hot sauder.

The next time it starts smoking, tap the carb lightly with a screwdriver handle, this will jar the float and if it starts running fine you know you have a float that isn't "Floating" You will then know to take the carb apart and check float setting and adjustment on needle valve

Carburation problem. Needle valve not seating causing flooding. first thought.

I agree. My first thought was that the float level might be off just a hair. mike
