We are doing the same thing, going from a 560 diesel to a 656 hydro gas. At the Nebraska tractor tests the hydro gas used 1.2 gph more fuel than the diesel under full load. Our's is mostly a haying and auger tractor so for us I think not having to wait on glow plugs will make up for the fuel use. If the engine ever dies on this 656 gas I'll be looking for an IH D-312 or a 3.9L Cummins to put in it. Our 560 diesel is great on fuel but I've come to the conclusion that if your going to have to deal with glow plugs you might as well have spark plugs.

I loved our 656 Hydro dearly and was sorry when we had to sell it, but even I have to admit that it was a gas hog. It seemed like it was always sitting in front of the pump waiting to be filled up. The year after we sold it, and bought a 105 HP 806 Diesel, we found that we saved a lot in fuel costs. That Hydro is awesome for light work, but whatever you do, don't be tempted to use it for heavy tillage work. Just using it on the plow one spring aged that transmission immensely. Was great for baling, raking, moving bales, and cutting.

Cliff: Having read your reasoning, and now myself being 17 years away from glow plugs, you are right. You just made me remember those cool fall days holding that glow plug button, and the very day it was least pleasant to sit there, you had to hold the button the longest.

Hugh, if it was going to be a main tractor getting 400-500 hours a year I'd go with the diesel but we've got an 826 and three 1066s to do the hard work with. The frustrating part about the 560 was waiting for the glow plugs on an 80° day to run it for a minute or two to back a wagon into the barn.

Cliff: Most of the years 1963-1978 I had my 560D it was a good portion of my main power source, however I also had 3 gassers and a skid steer, then in 72 I bought 656D with additional land.

In 75 I added the 1066 and a Deere 540A forestry skidder, 404 turbo with 8 speed power shift, great machine in bunker silos, great on disk or cultivator and excellent in bush.

I've never been very fond of that 1066, I think it should have given me better service than it did. I still call that 560D, 656D and that Deere the most efficient horse power I ever had.

Keep them both if you can. I run a new 560 diesel. Likes it ok. Many years later I had a 656 gas and it was OK except the engine, clutch and TA was shot. Always wish I had fixed it up.

Gary: I know what I'd be doing, I'd buy the 656 and do an engine switch. You'll love the user friendly 656 compared to the 560, but you will not love the gas consumption, nor the steady power you have with that diesel.

There is a good chance that 656 chassis is in excellent condition, as no one has been able to afford the gas in the past 30 years for any serious kind of farming with it.

If you love the 560 you will go absalutly gaga with the 656. many more comfort features on the 656 easier on and off. more operator platform room. better operator view. Im not sure about the power of 560 diesel but I have a 706 gas which is the same engine as the 656 and my 706 gas is a very strong motor I and several other people have found you cannot get them to run right with champian plugs though.

Ya use either a motor craft plug or a C86 A/C plug and put hightest in it and it will run like a swiss watch.

If the 656 were a diesel, you'd likely like it better. A 656 is extremely user friendly. Like the 460/560, very smooth, powerful, low vibration, comfortable. The 4/560 sat you back and the exhaust was way up ahead to add to the quietness. I'd try to keep both.

If the 656 is a gas no you won't because it will use twice the fuel the Diesel will.
