Fellas, I"ve been looking at everything from 574"s to 3088"s. Retirement farm auction coming up, one owner 1975 766D, with Westendorf WL-42 QT loader to sell seperately that"s currently on the tractor. From the photos, looks to be very straight with faded paint. Other than overall visual condition i.e. wear points, condition of tires, fluid leaks etc. What specifically should I be looking for on this tractor? I"d love to test the TA but probably hard to do in an auction setting. You guys are the experts, so please lend me some advice. If I like it and take the plunge.....I promise pictures!
Thanks
DJL

The weak spot in the 66 series tractors was sleeve and block cavitation. Check to see if the engine has a water filter. Also crack the oil plug and check for antifreeze in the oil. Another thing would be to test the antifreeze for correct pH. The test strips can be purchased at most automtive stores.

With the diesel tractors I've been around we've never had a water filter. If it has one.....what's that mean, is that an indication that it's getting oil in the coolant???

Is this gas or diesel? If it is a diesel I would definitely try it out for size because if it is in as good of shape as the one I have I know you won't be disappointed. Best of luck!

DJL: I agree with the flying Belgian. It's in that tractor sellers best interest for you to bring that tractor up to temp and test everything. You should even take along a remote implement cylinder.

It's dollars in his pocket as well as yours. If he doesn't want to play ball you best keep the dollars in your pocket for the rebuild.

When one is buying at a sale then one must buy it with the idea that the clutch and T/A are OUT and buy it with that in mind and when ya get it home and find that it is indeed out your not kicking yourself for buying it and you did not pay the price and have room to work and come out ok .
