I was wondering how long a rebuild will last, I had my super A rebuilt in 04, new valves, springs, guides, rings & rod bearings. By a retired IH mechanic, it ran great for 2yrs now its smoking like a steam engine again? The problem now is the mechanic has moved to Florida. Could have been partly my fault never really worked it real hard, maybe the rings never sealed? Any suggestions on where to start looking?
Thanks in advance,
Paul M.

Paul: You say smoking like a steam engine. What color is the smoke? If you remove the radiator cap after tractor is warm, do you see bubbles in the coolant?

If that smoke is white and you see bubbles, there is a good chance you have a head gasket leak. Right after the IH guy did the rebuild, did you run the tractor for a good working day then retorque the head?

The smoke is blue, I haven"t ran it with the radiator cap off I"ll have to try that & see if it has bubbles. Yes the IH mechanic retorqued the head bolts & adjusted the valves after it ran for a while. It did run rich, some black smoke when I throttled it up. But nothing like the blue smoke I get all the time now, mostly right after it starts up then it tapers off.
Thanks for the feedback,
Paul

Paul: If the smoke is blue, I doubt if your going to find bubbles. White smoke is usually associated with leaky head gasket, really steam, not smoke, as coolant makes it's way to the exhaust. Quite common with this is compression, making it's way to the radiator and causing bubbles. I had this happen once with my SA, looked like a small steam engine approaching, and the exhaust you get from the steam cylinder, not the fire box. My SA also blew bubbles in the rad. That was 10 years ago and I replaced the head gasket, no trouble since.

Since you cleared up the smoke color and the fact it goes away after warm up, what you need is some down right hard work for the little tractor. It's begging you for some real exercise. What have you got for equipment? 2 bottom plow and 10 acres plowing would do. 60" finish mower, 72" would be better. Even a stone boat with 2 ton of rocks on it, and in 2nd for 2-4 hours. Find something, and just tell the little beast, "Super A your getting in shape today". It will respond faster than your own body.

I find the plow, disk or field cultivator best for this. There is always someone looking to have a little corner tilled up. Often guys with big equipment will hire you. Bear in mind you'll recover little more than your fuel and wear and tear. They are probably plowing for less than $10. per acre with their big machines. You'll be lucky to get $20.per acre out of them, thus you will be plowing for $10. per hour. Don't put on a campaign for volume, just enough for yearly exercise.

Hugh, I think I'll try the stone boat setup. Don't really have any tillage equipment to speak of. It was only used to pull a small wagon of dirt occasionally, doubt it got hot enough I think like you say it may just need a good work out for it to get to temp & maybe seat the rings.

Thanks for the feedback, I"ll do a compression check and see what it shows then maybe the ATF trick and see if that helps.

If all that work was done there should be no smoke. I would pull allthe plugs keep them in order. Then run a compression check dry. Then add some oil to the cycls and run another check rite all readings down in order so you know each cycls readings. What brand and manufaxtures #. Then post what you get. Be sure the engine is warmed up first. Mite also want to change oil and replace with 10-30. Something is haywire some place. I have done o-hauls on these engines without your problems.

The rings may be stuck in their grooves (lans)
pour some ATF into each cylinder and let it soak for awhile. Then take the tractor out and work it under load to see if the smoking stops. Make sure your oil level is ok. If have a plow put it on this spring and do some plowing that will give it a good workout. I wouldn't pull it apart
right now. Don't run it low on oil. Hal
