I am thinking about making a shop tractor. I would like to put a chevy 350 v8 in it. I have seen it done at a couple of shows but did not get to talk to the guy. Would like to know if it would fit or not.

The man deserves a little respect, after all its GM cousin. Better than suggesting a Ford power-plant.

I'm a purist at heart, but a feller needs to have a little fun & adventure a few times in his life. We can sacrifice one more M for a little artistic indulgence.

More power to you, but don't blow out your gears over-revving the beast.

Sorry, if I sound like an old fuddy duddy, but 350"s should be in Chev and GMC pickups and 247"s in M"s or a Super M kit.

BB: Hmmmmm m, Shop tractor, why not stick new piston and sleeves in the M engine for 1/3 the cost. This boggles my mind why anyone, with gas prices where they are today, would want a Farmall M that burns 4 times the gas with that 350 Chevy.

Hugh I agree with you but, have you ever been to a street rod show? There will be hundreds of 1930s and 1940s model cars there that someone has spent thousands of dollars as well as hundreds of hours on installing late model power trains and updating with PS, AC, power windows etc. Most of them are beautifull pieces of craftmanship but for all Practical purposes a $2000 10 year old car would be better. As they say different strokes for different folks. The antique car people think it should be a felony to chop up old cars like that.

Hugh, somebody is always wantin to make a knife out of a file or a screwdriver out of a loaf of bread. The flaw in your thinking is you expect it to make sense to anyone else. It doesn't, although to my warped senses the ice cream powered tractor is totally logical LOL

gene: He said shop tractor, one would expect he has either a loader or boom pole for moving heavy parts. For the life of me, I can't think of any other shop use, rather precise work if you ask me.

As I recall the M had a govered speed range from roughly 500 rpm at low ible to 1450rpm at high idle. In that goverened range, that 350 Chevy won't be worth a tinkers damn. Now, can you imagine trying to set a truck engine in place with the M engine turning 2,500 rpm. Why the M would be more useful around a shop with a Super A engine, at least it would have enough torque at 650 rpm to do the job. Unless the shop is 1/2 mile or more long, the M will probably never see high gear.

Just how much is the cost of an M piston, sleeve, kit along with a head job? I'll bet it's less than 1/2 the cost of that proposed conversion.

It will fit, you will have to probably use an electric fan since new motor will sit much lower in frame than origional motor. You will have to make new flywheel/clutch, not that big of a deal. Good luck.
