HELP, breather system on a Super M

Question. Today I helped a bud install a 450 gas head on a Super M. The original M head has a breather tube which runs from one side to the other inside the valve cover. This has a port that exits at the rear outside of the head. Then connects to the air cleaner to create a vacuum of sorts. Anyhow the 450 gas head has one breather port at the front, but not the rear. Nor does it have the rear port on the outside of the head. How did the 450s breather system connect to the air cleaner? Did it even connect to the air cleaner?

I would like to get this right. Any help is appreciated.

Brian

I was able to find a 450 valve cover on ebay today for $15.00 , might as well do it correct. We were unaware of the differances between the heads.

Thank You to everyone for your help.

On the 400, 450 head they used a 1/4 inch steel pipe about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long in breather hole in the front of head. No pipe over rocker arms and a valve cover with a 1/4 inch pipe thread hole in top. Run a PCV hose from there to air cleaner.

If you want a exact length on pipe that goes in front breather hole, I could measure one tomorrow and post back.

I'm just going to make a 3" curved piece. That should be good. Appreciate the effort though :-)

it connects the same way your m does and pulls the vapors of the engine . a hose from the rear of the engine to the breather . it will pull the gases of the engine.

That's the problem. The 450 gas head doesn't have this port at the rear to connect up with the air cleaner. Does it go through the valve cover on a 450 tractor instead?

Yes . You need a 400 or 450 valve cover or just weld one on the SM valve cover

On our H, we did not have a breather going to the head from the cleaner. The air cleaner got smashed and that portion where it the connect was took the hardest hit. Anyway I got a "new" cleaner now and I was wondering should I hook up that pipe? do I really need one? I not really sure what they even do.

Thanks for the help

Andrew

Yes the tube draws crank case vapors out of the engine and burns them in the engine. Do connect it. JimN
