I have a set of rear 26 inch Goodyears on an O6. Both are like new. One has pretty serious checking (cracking). Is there anything that would keep it from getting any worse??

If the checking is showing structural cords in the tire body, I would use a black urethane elastomer (in warm weather) from a caulking tube. Door and window sealer material. Do the easy access locations on maybe 1/3 of tire, then wait for 4 days (must wait to allow curing) rotate tire and do next third etc. The tire could be jacked off the ground to do it all in one step. It would be time consuming on a really checked tire, but if it was clean to begin with, it should seal the cracks. Scrape the excess off with a flex blade putty knife, then scrape it into the next crack. The material is about the most sticky stuff around, and is nasty on your hands, wear plastic gloves. Its flexibility and toughness should be long lived. JimN

Hi , Keeping them out of the sun is most important and using them keeps the rubber flexible . So get out and use it as often as possible . There's a natural oil in rubber that when the tire is used keeps them pliable . Heat and UV destroys the rubber and dries it out . So do petroleum products as it wash this oil out of the pores of the rubber contributing to drying . So does acid , alkali and a bunch of other things . Your best bet is to keep them clean with a mild cleaner ( NOT a detergent ) and use some sort of quality tire dressing and drive on them often . If they are already checked there's not much you can do about it . Maybe someone else has a secret or not so secret remedy for checking . Good Luck ! ...Randy

As Dave said, the sun and ozone (sometimes from electrical sources like electric motors) are the two worst things on tires. As an example, in 1978 I bought my dad's Super H. He had left it outside a lot of the time in the summer in So Dak. The left rear tire had good tread, but was weather checked fairly bad (some cracks almost 1/8 inch wide). I have kept the tractor in the shed since I bought it and it still has the same rear tires. That left tire has not changed except for tread wear and the right one which was new back then is still like new except again for wear. Roger
