I'm in the process of rebuilding a carb for my M. At the bottom of the carb, there is a brass fitting with a screw-needle (air jet, I think it is). When I removed the brass fitting, there's some soft loose stuff in there. When looking thru the carb kit, I find the needle, then a little donut of something like soft lead. It seems to be the same material as I found inside. Does the donut go in, then the fitting, then the screw-needle? Thanks for your help.

The packing might be a graphite material instead of lead as noted in the post below. It just looks like lead and is soft like those old fishing weights we used as kids but appears a little darker. Sorry for any confusion on this in the nature of the packing material, Hal

That little donut is in fact a lead packing. You will need to remove it all from the carb in order to install a new one. I have this same little thing to replace on my SMTA as it leaks gas around the needle. I'm afraid to tighten the brass packing nut anymore for fear of breaking it. I believe (I haven't replaced mine yet) the way this works is that the packing nut when tighten compresses the lead packing around the needle to prevent leakage. When done correctly the needle will require a screwdriver to make an adjustment. Mine at present is very loose hence leaks gas until down to that level in the bowl. The lead packing part is readily available at a CaseIH dealer. Hope this helps, Hal.

Could that little "lead donut" be a really really deteriorated O-ring?
