Are the engines in the Super MD the same as the engines in the MD? Specifically the head. I am having trouble finding a head gasket.

Not sure unless I checked but seem to remember that if your MD has been rebuilt with 4 inch pistons and sleeves the later head gasket is okay. If MD has 3 7/8 bore the early head gasket is used. IH updated heads and a lot of MD SMD heads on tractors are not original. Most heads have the casting # on left front top between valve cover and injector. Most heads will interchange. Md came with a 4 digit # on head and leter or leters following. Some SMD and later used a 6 digit # with R? following #. This from memory so don't hold me to it but think # for latest head IH sold was 277098 R?. Theres a date code on heads with a lot cast after tractors quit being sold.

Checked up on myself when I got the chance and the 6 digit head looks like it started being used on MD engine serial # 14501. It was #260869 R1 and same head was used SM and 400. Had several and still have a couple of those diesels from MD to 450 and all had the 277098 head put on but one 400 tractor. Someone else may have a different experience with heads.

i recently did an overhaul on both an md and smd the last year and i got everything thru my local IH dealer. i had the engine kits within a week but had a long wait process for intake valves for the heads. i believe it took 5 weeks to get them sincerely,

AGR538 I was just curious are you a member of AGR? Also I think the Supers had a head like the 400D I looked in a book real quick and it said that they have to diffent heads, yet I think the same gasket will work. Try Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch, he is sure to have the answer for you and the part.

Other than the diameter of the holes in the block for the cylinders, they should be the same. Unfortunately, that means a different head gasket.
