Still on the hunt for that perfect tractor. How are the IH 3088"s?? 80HP is about the size I"m needing and it looks like you can get a 3088 with 3-4,000 hours on it for about the same price you may pay for a real straight JD 3020 or 4020? The 3088 would be alot newer and chances are have a whole lot fewer hours on it! I"m not all that familiar with the 88 series. Dad bought a 986 new in 1980, and I wasn"t all that impressed. It never carried very good oil pressure and would grind into gear everytime even after multiple adjustments. Tractor only has 2800 hours and has never been abused. Did IH get the shifting thing improved with the 88 series? I appreciate all the help you guys give on this forum. I sure ask alot more questions than I could ever answer. I"m sure many of you have forgotten more about tractors, than I"ll ever know!

We bought a 3088 with 1700 hours a few years ago. Also have a 786, which is basically the same thing. The shifting is slightly improved on the 88 series- the levers are to your right, the transmission brake is applied by hydraulic pressure when the clutch pedal is depressed vs. the linkage on the 86 series for smoother shifting, and the TA is shifted by an electronic switch vs. the cable on the 86 series. The 3088 gets a good workout on a NH 790 chopper doing 9-foot windrows at about 4 1/2 mph, or 2 rows of corn at about 2 mph. Used to do these jobs with the 786, the 3088 does not run any hotter. Main problem with the fan shaft through the radiator/air box design is that anything ahead of the engine is a pain to work on. The low engine oil pressure complaint you have on your 986- are you going by the guage in the dash, or have you installed an actual mechanical guage into the engine"s oil gallery? Those electric oil pressure guages in the dash on the 86 series are well known for reading low. I would take a low-houred 3088 over a 4020 any day, mostly because of the fact that I have worked on a ton of older Deeres and found that the things that make them nicer to run than an IH also make them way more difficult and expensive to repair.

DJL: When IH came out with 88 series, I declared that was the end of IH tractors already on the downhill, that was in 1981. I said then that fan shaft through the radiator with a suck fan out would be a nightmare. I drove one of these back then, and I couldn't see any shifting improvment over 86 series.

I do know some of the results of my prediction, however that was the last time I was ever in an 88 series tractor, thus I have no idea how they stood the test of time. We do know IH didn't, and we know CaseIH did not keep the suck fan.

I'm sure there are folks around with more 88 experience than I.

Thanks Hugh. I always appreciate your advice.

Anybody else with 88 series experience, please chime in, as I'm getting the tractor itch pretty bad.....

I don't know how they compare to the 3088 you're looking at, but a neighbor has a 5088, and it's been a darned good machine.

I've even run it a little, and it's a nice machine, even to a leans-to-the-green-side guy like me.

(Even WITH the fanshaft through the radiator... NO big deal there!)

5088 is a totally different beastie. Different engine, STS transmission with 18 forward speeds and synchromesh/powershift between the speed gears. HEAVY, and no clearance under the rear end.

The 3088 is mostly 786 with new sheet metal. It's the final decendant of the 706. Overall a pretty good tractor in most people's books from what I've seen and heard over the years.
