We need to kknow much more before answering. Is it a diesel? is it converted to 12, or originally 12? does it have an alternator? our answer is dependant on this. JimN

this is a diesel with a 12 volt altenator. i"m having trouble starting it un less the weather is very warm out side. i have taken and checked all the glow plugs and thought perhaps one 12 volt battery was not putting out enoughh juice. any ideas? thanks, tim

If you checked the glow plugs out of the injector housings, they should become red hot in about 20 seconds after applying 12 volts. When checking installed, disconnect 5 of them and then watch the meter as you energize them. Do the same to the other five. The meter will not move very far but it should be equal for all six. This will also check the wires and connections.

460 Diesels are noted for hard starting when cool. The shorter piston stroke as compared to the 560s accounts for much of this. IH also changed the valve recession specs causing further lowering of compression. When rebuilding a head for the 460 I always have the recession set to as close to .003 as I can get rather than the later .045.

Is the tractor turning over to slow?
When it does start, does it miss, cold stack, light gray smoke for a long time?
Are you holding the glow plugs on for 1 minute?

sounds like an injector problem. If you could put it under heavy load for awhile it may clear up. If you can the best thing to do would be to pull the injectors, have them cleaned and pressure checked.
Just a thought here, are you getting any leakage around the injectors when it is running? My 660 was starting that way and I discovered that 3 of my injectors were leaking. Put in new seals and o rings problem solved.

You would see air/fuel bubbles seeping from around the injector body.

In My reply to CNKS, I assumed a generator. Reverse the ground and solenoid connection, and the info stands. JimN

Only reason I know this is that I have a disassembled 460 -- Operator's manual indicates negative ground.

460 gas were 12 volt from the factory, 12 volt generator, 6 volt coil with a resistor, or whatever you call it. I think the diesel also had only one 12 volt battery, but I'm too lazy to look that up.

Thanks CNKS, I didn't know, but do now. I was fishing. Safe to indicate that if the batterys are hooked in parallel pos to pos to ground, and neg to neg solenoid, and very similar in capacity and age, that it would be OK to have 2 batteries no matter what. also that secure mounting (box Prefered) is best. You mean in series which would give you 24 volts. If you put them in parallel you would still have 12 volts. CENTAUR
