1948 Farmall Super A

I noticed the seal for the seed plate drive is leaking which doesnt look like a problem to fix (I hope). I have put new gear oil in the transmission case but this oil looks darker than the new oil and its thicker. I see that it is lower then the plug that drains the gear oil so...

I wonder if this is just the old oil still in there and it didnt get drained out or if the seed drive is oiled from the oil in the final drive? (I havent replaced the oil in the final drive yet.)

I know the oil leaking out the seed drive is darker color because I have a gasket that is also leaking on the PTO so I can compare it pretty easly.

Anyway, where does the seed plate drive oil come from?

The oil is final drive oil. There is a seal around the seed plate drive; on the Super A there is a "carrier" that is bolted to the final drive for the seal. Later models use a seal that presses into the final drive. The later seal will work, don't use the carrier, and the seal will ride in a different spot on the drive and "should" seal better if the drive has a groove worn it. They will also leak out the center. The 140 added a extra washer with grooves for o-rings to seal the center, but you need the bolt from the 140 too, as it is longer. The Super A will not have this, unless the seed plate drive was a later add on.

Daniel,

Thanks. I kind of figured thats where the oil was comming from because of the color. I had'nt replaced the oil in the final drive because I was putting it off trying to get the other leaks fixed before I did them.

I guess now its a good time to replace the oil in both drives and get new gaskets for them and the one for the seed drive. I'll get it off tomorrow and then I can see what kind of seal is in there and know where I need to go from there.

Last day of warm weather (70's) before it gets down to a chilling 50 degrees. Good thing I have a heated building to work in. I been watching the cold up North on TV (Yikes). Yall come on down, I have coffee and will go get donuts. Anyone know how to play "42"?

Be sure not to overfill the finals, that is a good way to get them to leak. The fill plugs are on the inside of the finals between the draw bar studs. They have square recess heads and are sometimes hard to see if they are full of crud. You need a funnel with a hose on it to fill them.

Daniel,

I got it off and got the seal out, its a number 53599-D. Has a kind of concave outside.

I see three is a groove on that drive like you mentioned there might be. I took the center bolt out and thre isnt any O-ring, just a lock washer. Far as I can tell it wasnt leaking from there so I hope that will be OK when I get it back together. I might add some greese to it some way and maybe that will help seal it up.

Im taking the seal to bushing and seal place close to me to see what they can match this too. Maybe it will be a little differant where it wont ride in the groove. In fact if its like the other ones I can probly put two of the new cheep ones in place of this old one.

If your seal is in a carrier bolted to the housing, you can take the carrier off and not use it. The alternate seal IH provides fits directly into the housing without the carrier and moves the seal back onto an unworn area. On the other hand if you don't have the carrier, you could get one and move the seal out. Either way the seals are different. I hope this is clear as mud. I working on one now myself. Don't loose the "sleeve" a new one is $135.00 from CNH.
