Getting ready to do the brakes on my A and need your advice/suggestions. What is the best way to hold up the bull gear and how much do they weigh? Somone posted that they broke the drive pinion gear, is that easy to do? How do I proceed to NOT break it? One post talked about the diff shims-do they come out that easy? Where do I need to be VERY careful-as in more than normal? What usually gets stuck and whats the best way to get them un stuck.
Thanks for any help here cause I don't know what they look like inside. I've got parts and service manuals.

I would do the drivers side first then you are familiar with how they work and how to take apart. Remove tire and center sec with a cherry picker as the cast center weighs 147lbs. After getting that out of the way you can remove the final drive where it bolts to the cast diff shaft housing. Using the cherry picker again you can remove the final drive easy. Blocking left side is important to remove the final drive. Mite need to replace the seals at this time remembering that the diff shaft comes out the wheel side of the final drive this will require removing the brake drum. Just be carefull and shore up the tractor careful before removing the final drives. If you dont have a cherry picker i would rent one or borrow as it beats lifting. Final drives dont need to be taking apart just remove the diff shaft to do the seals.

Thanks Gene, I have a picker but wondering what the best way to "pick" the cast hub is, thought of using the weight holes, value my toes. Also, what is the best way to pick the housings, I thought of using the holes for the hitch mounts but they are low and would make it top heavy. Then, does the diff shaft come off with the housing or does the drum and shaft stay in diff housing? Lastly, any hidden bolts and the best way to deal with stuck bands? I guess the simple Q is what can I expect to come with the gear housing and what stays in the shaft housing? Thanks again.

I use a nylon strap and go around the rim at the top does a great job of balancing. To remove put the strap around the final drive at the top where it fastens to the diff housing. Yes the shaft will come out with the housing. The band either will be on the pin that it mounts to with the final or it mite remain on the diff housing. Thats why i said to remove the drivers side first it is easier to support the tractor and then you have a better idea of the project. The final will balance on the picker pretty well. The final mite be pretty secure to the housing just make sure ALL the bolts are out. The two underneath are a little tricky because of their location. There is also two guide dowels mite want to spray some WD OR SOMETHING AS THEY CAN HOLD UP THE SEPERATION SOMETIMES PRETTY GOOD. I have a 2 lb leadfilled hammer to go around to tap and get a smallcold chisel started it must come off equal so the locating pins dont bind. Just be careful and take your time then the left side will be much easier. good luck gene

Thanks Gene-that's exactly what I needed to know. I have an air hammer/riveter with a couple of soft brass inserts that I set on low pressure. It does a good job loosening and separating cast parts without damage. Thought I would paint the dowels with sparkplug never seize when it goes back together.

thats a great idea. I like to use the never sieze stuff when i put them back as when the next guy does it in another 50yrs it will help him.
