Does anyone have any knowledge re: Dunbar Kapple Power Steering Units made in Geneva, IL? I own a 1951 Farmall M that has one of these units. It seems to be working fine now, But I'd like an Operators and/or Parts manual. I'd like to have background re: when these were manufactured and whether parts are available from anyone.

My Dad worked for them for 18 years, only in Batavia Il, just a few minutes south.

biggerred,
Thanks for the info. Does your Dad have any leads for me re: the power steering unit? Does he know of anyone that was at DK in the early 50's?

I was born & raised in Batavia, lived in Batavia Twp. for almost 60 years and didn't realize that DK had moved to Batavia til a few days ago!

Part of the reason I bought this tractor was due to the DK power steering coming from my "home area!"

I'd love to know more about it and it's history.

Bob

They had a plant next to the old Batavia Body Works, on a little island, on the north of the Fox river bridge there in town. (Before you turn north on 25 hwy) He went to work there in 57 or 58. The area he worked in made parts for the Genmni (sp?), Mercury and Appllo space programs. The Ag stuff was made on the other side of the plant. They closed down years ago and moved to Cal. last I heard of. I started school there in 68 at the old Blaine St. School. We lived on Morton St. off of 31(?) Hwy across from the cemetary. I left after 76.(Went in the Army right out of high school)Batavia: Home of the Battleing Bulldogs!!

Mark,
Yes, I believe that garin moving equipment was one of their primay products. They were in business in Geneva, IL for many years then moved to Batavia,IL (my hometown) for the last years of their existance as an independent company. At the end they were purchased by another company and all operations were moved out of state. To the best of my knowledge, the aquiring company is still building and selling vacuaters.

My Farmall M was owned by the same farmer from it's build date to the present time. It went thru two intermediaries before my purchase, a few weeks ago.

I'm guessing that the original owner had the unit installed shortly after his purchase.

The only information I have been able to find is a reference a 16mm B&W film produced on 8/21/50 by the National Assoc. of Manufacturers entitled "Power Steering for the Tractor - Mfg. Power Steering for Tractors Dunbar Kapple, Geneva IL."

I have not tried to view the film since I believe it requires going to the Smithsonian in Washington, DC

That's a new one on me. I'm familiar with the Char-Lynn and the Behlen. Never heard of a Dunbar-Kapple. Any chance of some photos?

I"ll try to do that in the next couple of days. My first digital photos didn"t turn out very well. But I"ll try again and then pass them on to you.
