I'm putting the cylinder head back on a '41 MD after some engine work and I'd like to know what the torque spec is for the head bolts. Also, what is the correct method for torquing head bolts? Should they be backed off a quarter turn after reaching the spec torque? Should they be re-torqued while the block is hot?

In addition to what n9lhm said, you should torque in several steps. I start out at 1/4 the necessary torque, torque all the bolts in the correct sequence, then again at 1/2 torque, again at 3/4 torque and a fourth time at final torque. Do NOT back off after reaching torque. Re-torque when engine is warmed up to opperating temp.

110 ft.-lbs. Service manual says to begin tightening the nuts at the center of the head and continue back and forth across the head toward each end.
