Purpose of a hydraulic check valve?

right now i have 2 valves on the 300u. The one set for single acting has nothing o it. The one set for double acting, has the safety regulator between it and the res. It also has a check valve bolted to the bottom of it. What exaclty does the check vavle do? Is it required on all of these valves setup for double acting? I hope to someday put double acting cylinder on the main lift arms, and am wondering if I will need a checkvavle. In the true sense of a check vavle, I dont see the purpoose, as fluid needs to flow both ways in a double acting setup.

So i dont NEED it if I get 2 waw cylinders for the lift arms and turn the other valve without this device into a double acting valve, it just wont keep its position over time, which doesnt matter to me, it best to leave the loader arms down anyways.
Thanks guys!!

It may be a "Pilot operated check valve". It closes tight on the cylinder side, both lines if double-acting. It opens when pressure is applied on the operating valve side. A tiny cylinder (the pilot) within the check valve operates to open the check valve.

What you've got (assuming it's the IH original equipment) is a cross-check valve. It allows fluid flow in BOTH directions, but requires hydaulic pressure (i.e., you have to use the control valve while the engine's running) to move in one of those directions. This is the solution to a leaky control valve (which your 300U has/had, even when new). If operating properly, and hooked up so that the check is on the side which moves your hitch "up", your cross-check valve will hold a loaded hitch up indefinitely (weeks or months), rather than have it slowly lower as fluid leaks back through the control valve.

The only drawback is that you have to have the engine running to lower the hitch - simply moving the control valve's handle with the engine "off" won't do it. I guess it probably wouldn't work with a single-acting cylinder either, now that I think about it.

It keeps oil from returning to the sump if the valve is actuated when the engine isn't running. Without it the oil will go to the sump and not fill the other side of the double acting cylinder that the pump would if the engine was running.

The check valve is to keep the hyd cyl from settling with a load on it. Some valve spools hold a load up better than others. Check valve is just a positive load check.

Someone may correct me, I believe it is to restrict the return flow from a cylinder (especially one that lifts equipment like a hitch, or loader, when a valve, hose/line, or seal failure happens. Thus reducing injury or damage. JimN

It is pretty well the same thing, a pilot operated checkvalve, but when used for that purpose they are called a hose burst check valve and are mounted on the ram, not the valve. A hose burst check valve however will not stop a ram from retracting if the ram seals fail as oil simply is leaked from one side of the ram to the other without passing the valve.
