I have a 1945 H and the exhaust manifold that is on it is shot. Ive already received a new one and I am waiting on gaskets. The bolt assembly is so rusty I am concerned as how to properly remove the old manifold without damaging the engine block. I am considering possibly using an acetylene torch or using some PB blast.

Don't know if I just got lucky, but a quick spray of PB blaster and those manifold nuts backed off just as easy as you please.

Give it a try, and go easy....you might be surprised!

I agree with the posts below about using a tap and die set to clean the threads. If the studs turn out I'd replace them with new ones, the metal is pretty fatigued after 60+ years of heating and cooling.

When I replaced mine I broke half of the studs off and had to use an easy out. Surprising enough they did come out pretty easy.

You need to use that torch as Rusty suggested. You may need to run a tap through the threads too. Hal

Just changed mine on my 41 H had the same problem they ended up screwing out of head. Worked out great and I did use PB blaster put same studs back in. Good luck

Very little chance of doing any damage to the block. The worst that can happen is you might twist off some of the studs, but if that happens you can weld a nut to the broken stud and then they usually come out easily. Since you have the torch, use it. Heat those nuts cherry red, spray some PB blaster on them as they cool down (let them cool a bit before spraying) and then the nuts should come off fairly easy. If they don't, heat them again. You will probably want to use new nuts for re-assembly.

Clean the threads good and spray them with PB Blaster. Let it set for a couple of hours and then go at the nuts. Make sure you use a good fitting 6 point socket. They normally aren't all that bad to get off.
