I was talking with one of the guys in my manual transmission class at the vocational school, and he's bringing in a 4-speed from an S-10 to build for class...after which he said he'd give me the tranny, since he's got "a pile of 'em," as he put it.

I was just remembering someone here had an H with--IIRC--a 2.8 V6, and the guy said he used an S-10 4-speed, in 2nd gear for a 2:1 reduction ratio. I'm interested in the specifics as to how the S-10 tranny--or parts thereof--was installed...and whether any [or much] 'spensive machine work was required.

I've got an H that needs an engine transplant, and I'm considering using 460-up side rails and installing a spare IH truck six I have...and a 2:1 gear ratio would take the IH six's 3600-rpm top speed down to the equivalent of the 1800 rpm required to match the speeds originally available from the H.

Anyone have info or helpful input? Thanks in advance.

The tractor in ? belongs to Clem Seivert of Granger Ia. I think he installs the tranny in the torque tube, locked in 3rd.

I don't have any real specific help, but as this question will generate interest, here are a couple pictures of the tractor in question...

Thanks, Guys! That's exactly the tractor I was thinking of. If anyone has any information about the technical side of sticking that transmission inside the torque tube, I'll be ever-so-grateful!

Obvuously, looks like the original belly pump had to be "sacrificed" to make this work...so with a belt-driven pump, I might even be able to end up with live hydraulics!

As far as making the pre-'69 IH sixes work, I've been told that, other than the obvious "stretching" of the hood and the steering shaft, the truck flywheel will have to be machined to accept the H starter ring gear, and I might have to make a new motor plate to mate up at the bellhousing. But the rest is all 460 thru 806 parts, as I understand.
