656 Axle Seal Leaking...AGAIN

We have a 656 Utility with high hours. The one axle seal was leaking badly, so I replaced it a few months ago. The seal was fine for a while, but now it seams that when I have a round bale on the three point and am on the side of a hill the fluid just GUSHES out of the seal. The problem doesnt seem near as bad when I dont have any weight on the three point. I shimmed the bearing like the book said when I replaced the seal, but it would almost seam like I need to shim it more...Could it be since it has 10K hours on it that the inner bearing is loose, causing the axle seal to cock and leak? Ideas??
Thanks

There were a couple utility models (the ones that looked like a square nut on end of axle hub) where they put a cast hub on a steel axle. Ford did that back when. New seals & O-rings don't help for very long. Wheeler-dealers use newspaper in there somehow and pepsi to put a glaze on the piston rings and coke so the clutch won't slip for a few hours and then to the auction. And they say works as it should.

Mike,

You're not getting baler twine in the thing are you? That stuff will kill a seal in a heartbeat.

Though not a super easy analysis,
with weight on the axle, Using the depth gauge slider on a 6" caliper, measure from a point where the axle comes out of the housing, to the axle straight down, at the top. Take the weight off with a jack, so that the wheel/tire is suspended an inch or two. Make the same measurement again. If there is more than about .002" I would be repairing the bearing shims, bearings, or both. The wear location on the axle/hub which touches the seal could also be grooved. A spedy steeve, or setting the seal at a different depth, or using a different seal with a lip location different from the original will work wonders. JimN

When I replaced the seal I put a speedy sleeve on the sealing surface, so thats not the problem. I might try to do that measurement this weekend. I did notice the hub that slides on the splined axle is looser than on the other side. Kinda like the spline is worn. Maybe the hub woobles on the spline and leaks...

Shimming a set of splines is not easy, Many little strips to hold in place, then it may have play in the torque direction allowing additional wear from twisting forces. A different hub might be called for. JimN

Do they make an "oversize" seal that might be slightly smaller on the sealing diameter? I wonder if something along those lines might work.. Or a double lip seal? Anyone know the national seal number for the axle seal??

I am sure there will be several options in the seal category from Motion Industries, or other bearing houses. Taking the old seal/number will help. As will a cooperative counter person. Make sure to grease behind the seal and pack it when installing, clean seal on clean speedy sleeve will last about five rotations. When removing the hub, wiggle it with the bolt removed. If it is clearly loose on the splines, I would seriously consider replacement. JimN
