Hi folks,
I rewired the glowplugs and changed the expensive originals for a modified version that uses the body of the original as an adapter to hold a new type, less expensive, and hotter plug. 5 seconds of preheating and it started like a new one. Less than an hour for everything and I've had the stuff to do it inthe toolbox for almost 2 years. Can't wait to see what it does after setting outside all night. Anyway, just over a year ago, I noticed what looked like oil in the radiator. Not the usual milky look, just a black film. No water in the oil. Stick your finger in the radiator and it comes out with a film of something that looks and smells more like suit than oil.
Anyone run into something like that before? I didn't see it when I checked the tractor out before I bought it.

Thanks, Dave

Great news on the changeover. Post the parts and pieces so it can be duplicated. Decomposing rubber hoses are made from hydrocarbons, and get stringy and smelly. I would chang the fluid with a flush (and while down, I would pull a hose or two and check their inner walls with a fingernail, if they can be scratched into, they are bad. JimN

Here is a picture of the adapter.
Link

When the link opens, you have to go to the far right column (schraubertips) and click on the "gluhkerzen" link.

The writing just says that it lets you use a VW turbo diesel glowplug that gets 300 degrees celcius hotter than the original in D-series tractors. And that you have to bypass the original wiring with a heavy duty setup.

That's the smell I couldn't quite pick out. I changed all the hoses last year except the bottom one. They pretty much crumbled in my hand. The bottom one is probably shot too.
I'll try to find pictures of the new plugs. I bought them from the guy that makes them. Not sure what all models they fit. Looks like just the guts were taken from an original and the hole retapped to accept the regular glow plug. I paid less for all three with glowplugs than one original. I'll try to find a picture. The wiring was just running a seperate heavy wire to each plug through a switch to the battery instead of the finer original wiring.
