What is IH-NH's, & Wisconson Archives, position on reproducing and distribution of original McCormic-Deering, IH Service manuals, bulletins, etc?

You see a lot of people pushing this stuff out on CDs, reprints, etc. What is the official company/archive stance.

It appears that everyone assumes they fall in Public domain, however, their trademark is clearly stamped on all documents, even if specific copyright information is not shown!

Do you have the name and number's of contacts to talk to in this area.

In Fact, I think in the next few days I'm going to scan my 300u operators manual and put it onlne. even the dealer books, which this is is a horrible copy, the pictures look like dog doo.
Ideally I would like to put it in PDF format, but I dont have the adobe program to do it, nor do I know the name of such a program. I think I will just scan big pics of it, might be a bit bulky, but if I zip them up it should decrease the size a bit. another problem is scanning the pages without ruining the binding. I'll see how it goes, might be able to help some folks out.

Adobe Acrobat. Acrobat Reader is the free stripped down software that reads the files created in Acrobat.

Here's what I would suggest if you can't do pdf. Scan the pages as jpeg and upload them to free site like yahoo or epson phot gallery. Post the index and label it as such. Them name the files with page numbers so a guy could find what he wants.

It's pretty sad that these materials, some (actually quite a bit) over 50 years old are not in the public domain. I think it would keep alot of the old iron around. I know its not much money, but an old farmer who spends his money on a tractor, then having to spend more money when a problem arises, then more money on a service manual, might just say screw it and let it sit and rust away. I know its not likely, but I'm sure it happens. Why else is there tractors going to rot. People may not have the know how to fix them, but given a nice book that helps, can go a long way. And where do people go to get parts, most likely the dealer. I will never buy a service manual, I will part my tractor out before that. I can go to my local library and get any repair info on most cars from haynes/chiltons, and so on, but there is no books on repairing tractors (That I know of, might have to check it out). CaseIH, cant seriosuly be making much on these licenses, they already rape you for the cost of parts (and yes I have purchased dealer parts unfortunately, then seen them new on ebay for 1/2 the price). I would think it would encourage people to fix there old tractors with DEALER parts. I guess its all about sucking as much money out of IH diehards that they can. Maybe one day all this old literature will be public domain.... maybe one day... when case gets bought out by someone else.. maybe.. =(

Case still enforces the trademark. A lot of those copies on e-bay are pretty poor. For parts manuals, operator's and service manuals, Binder Books has a liscense and produces the best copies BY FAR. Many Case-IH dealers now have the online parts manual up anyway.

One suspects many of those e-bay guys will be betting Case cease and desist letters shortly.

You can produce copies for your own use, you just can't sell them.

Thx I wanted to clear the air, cause it seemed irregular, so to speak, based on my past teaching experience.

What do you think would be Case's response to a free posting of early service bulletins and sales literature. Are there plans to market these as well? What was formally turned over to the WI archives, and is that material officially declared as public domain?

Yes I just stumbled upon a set of original 1939 documents in a dealer service binder.

No, the stuff donated to the archives is not in the public domain, the WHS has an agreement with Navistar for reproduction.

As far as the other question, contact John Harper at CNH in Racine.
