Did the Super MTAD ever have the fast hitch or power steering option? I have come across one that the owner is swearing that it came with both options straight from the factory. I new the 300/400 series had them optional, but never heard of the Super MTA or Super MTAD having them from the factory. Thanks.

If thats what he says he must be the original owner. If so ask him where the operators manual that came with tractor is and where it shows how to operate and maintain the fast hitch and power steering. Won't find any parts for them in a SMTA parts book either.

niether one was factory. power steering wasn't an option on the first 400's. i have an original price and options list for super mta's and there is no fast hitch or power steering listed.

Sonny Day: Power steering maybe, fast hitch NO. A 400 fast hitch will not even bolt up to an SMTA. Not until 450 came along was there a fast hitch to fit an SMTA.

I have a SMTA that has a fast hitch but I'm the 3rd owner I think. As I understand it was added later, but that's about all I know. Did IH offer a special update option at some point for the SMTA's??? or what ??? Mine has a Char Lynn power steering unit and is leaking oil. How difficult is that unit to repair

alred1: I can't enlighten you much on the power steering. All the old Farmalls I've owned with the steering shaft along overtop the engine, did not have power steering. The only power steering Farmalls I ever owned were 560, 504, 656 and 1066. I'm a farmer, if I didn't own it, I never experienced it. Try one of the mechainc folks here at YT, they have seen it all.

On your fast hitch, the MTA deck was not drilled for the 400 fast hitch. After the new fast hitch came on the 450, many IH dealers ordered in new hitches and retro fitted them on MTA tractors. It is possible to install a 400 type hitch if you install the 400 deck or transmission cover.

Hugh
What had to be done to the SMTA's besides removing the standard drawbar to make a 450 fast hitch fit? or was the hitch modified?

I think my power steering probably just needs seals, I'm not sure what I'm going to run into when I start disassembling.

alred1: Once you remove the standard drawbar the 450 hitch is a direct bolt up. The difficult part will be hydraulic control valve if you want draft control. That would have been the special order part 50 years ago. I doubt if you can buy the valve anymore. If you just want up and down hydraulics, then any double action valve will work, probably one with float position would be best.
