Hi Joe, my brother has 454,495,684,& 3230. The 454 and 495 are 3 cyl D179, the 3230 has 4 cyl D206 and the 684 has 4 cyl D239. The 884 has 4 cyl D268. These tractors all share the same UK build frame and transmission and German Neuss built engine. The D268 is just a bored and stroked D239. These engines are very reliable. My brother has over 15,000 hrs on his 454 and it still runs great. The only over heating problem we had was on the 454 and it was solved by steam cleaning the rad core. When the rad was clogged one of the noticeable things was the lower rad hose would be sucked flat by the water pump.

Good reliable engine worth spending a few $$ to fix.

My 2 cents
JimB

If the Tstat is in backwards it will overheat. There is usually a stamping on the body rim that says this side to radiator. Defective tstats are not common, but do leave the factory. Check yours in a pan on the stove (rinse the pan well) As staed bel;ow fluid should circulate when at the 190 to 200 degree area. Nich find if you paid low bucks for it. JimN

Hi Joe, I assume 884 over heats in 20 mins without load on engine? So that would eliminate slow timing.
You said you had rad steam cleaned?
Looking thru the filler tube can you see the coolant circulate when the thermostat opens?
Water pump working correctly? Only suggestion is to try without thermostat.

Don't overheat the engine or the "O" rings will blow out of the bottom of the sleeves and there will be coolant in the crankcase oil.

Good Luck
JimB
