The things I very poorly described as "cans" in my earlier post I will try to describe more accurately here.
They start about 6" back from the front tie rod on the drag link. The drag link does not seem to be fastened solid to the front of them but goes inside, but the drag link is welded solid on the other end (seat side). These are steel "tubes, about 8 inches long and 2 3/8ths " O.D. What are they for or what do they do?
Also, Thanks to all on the help to tighten the splines, those suggestions will be followed when it warms up, 15 degrees below now.
Thanks again.
Jim

It sounds like you have a type of "torsion" drag links. They are two piece like you describe with a spring inside. Apparently they take some of the shock away from driver on rough ground, I guess. My 300/350 parts manual doesn't show them, but I believe my 330/340 manual does, which I don't have with me now to look at. Have only seen them on one tractor and in manual.

That does make ALOT of since since my 300u and I believe most 300u's dont have power steering. I'd been yanked about sometimes and its no fun =P

I was looking into a design to this effect for my model trucks, but found that the play springs invite do not lead to a stable model going 50mph =P This was a modified torsion design, as a standard design was limited by space. I kinda gave up on the idea.

These "cans" are built into the drag links on my 300u, with the front of the can starting about 6" back from the front end of the drag link. Maybe something from another tractor that was put on mine! Otherwise, our drag links sound like they are the same.

I'm still confused. My draglinks are pipes with threaded ends which have a split cut in them and a clamp around them, I'm assumging to adjust the draglink length without having to take off either balljoint, just loosen the clamp and make the adjustment, then retighten.

I'm still confused...

Our 350U does not have the dampener "cans". They may be from a different tractor as a replacement, or to try to reduce shock to the steering gear and arms of operator. JimN
