I remember seeing a post on low or extra low speed gears for a Farmall H. Is there any possibility of getting a set like that, and what would the cost be?

I have a 1951 H with the low gears. The last set of gears I saw sold was on Ebay and they brought $575. The H I have is for sale at $1250 if you hear of anyone looking for a complete tractor.

Certain serial number M's and W-6's gears interchange with the W-6 gears alittle slower. Maybe you can do the same with H's and W-4's. Check out the parts books for similar main shafts or counter shafts.

I think you are mistaken on the W-4 gear train. Because the standard tread tractors have smaller tires, the engineers compensated by speeding up the gear sets. This is certainly true of the differential ring and pinion. Not certain if the tranny sets were changed. I would be more inclined to look at I-4 gears because "slow" is more important on construction sites than in the crop field.

Anyway, a good set of parts books is necessary to study the situation.

You can put in the low low first but you need to get the I think constant drive gear with that too. I know you need a couple of gears. I know a guy who I pull with who paid like $600 for his low low gears but Im not shure if that is the norm. Or you could get lucky and get one that had it factory my father got his 54 Super H with those low low gears and wow what a diffrence that makes.

Good Luck!

Because the countershaft low-low first gear is so small, it is machined on the countershaft. In addition to that, you will need a different second-gear countershaft gear because the regular gear is a cluster gear with first and second made from the same chunk of metal. You will also need a new reverse idler gear. Finally, you will need a new mainshaft first gear. There may be misc parts such as spacers and bearings.

There is a slim chance that tranny parts from a 460 will fit and give you a low-low first. I wouldn't count on it, but to be sure, you would have to consult both parts books. If it did work, it is likely that your PTO would not work.

I mention the above because I installed 560 gears and bearings in a SMTA transaxle. I got a low-low first and, when it was multiplied by the lower speed differential, it is very slow. I did the math at some point, and first gear was less than half of stock. I think it was around .7 mph at rated rpm.

The factory recommends that tractors (Farmall M) equipped with the low-low option use a wide front and four front wheel weights.

I suspect there is some crop that used the low-low set-up. Perhaps a tree nursery for transplanting. I dunno. Maybe somebody else does.

We bought our Super H from the origional owner, and he said the reason he got the low low gear was to plant, and cultivate. I guess back in the 50's and 60's the man had quite a veg. farm and that was his big tractor. and the low low gear is stamped in the serial number plate, M would indicate low low gears for the later supper series and newer, before that that it would be like X6 or X6A there was a whole list of number that they used to indicate optional speeds.

Andrew, is the serial number with the low speed gears SH 13XXX MJ or SH 20XXX MJ? I think I have your tractor on the serial number list but I don't have the M suffix listed for low speed gearing. Only 3 tractors on the list out of 542 have the M suffix. Thanks, Pat in Wis

I have to check the exact serial number, but its like SH 27634 M J or something like that, was made in mostly June and July of 54 from the cast codes. I know It has the low low gears I got the info from Guy Fays data book. I know its a pretty rare combanation a Stage II with the low gear package.

Thanks, would appreciate knowing the number and adding it to the list. Sure not many M code super H's that I've seen. Pat in Wis
