300U clutch starter?

A few questions guys. I need to know if the flywheel teeth are supposed to be chamfered, or is it just worn that bad? Can the ring gear be filed and flipped around, or do I have to buy a new one. Also I need to know where I would get a new clutch and what parts are needed. The tractor is a 300U serial 7090 PJ
The starter wont engage, however, if i try the starter outside of the tractor, the gear goes all the way up. I cleaned and relubed it with lightweight oil. Do these starters ever need shimmed, I'm thinking no? If I have to split it to fix the ring gear, I'm doing the clutch too.

I'd like to know what all I'd need to replace in the clutch, I know the plate is going bad. The pads are nearly worn to the plate If I'm splitting the tractor for the ring gear, then I'm doing the clutch and the rear engine seal. So Any help in finding the following parts would be appreciated...

Engine, rear main seal..
pressure plate
throw out bearing
fingers? or the kit or whatever...
Flywheel ring gear...
input shaft seal (or whatever seal is opposite

If someone could scan from their service books the starter and/or clutch pages, I would be in debt to you. I really think tractors this old outta have service books online like online libraries that have chiltons and stuff. Oh well, I guess people are out to make a buck.

I'm trying to minimize cost and still do it right. I can see so far its ging to be a PITA to split this thing. Lets just hope I dont break ANY bolts off or it's not gonna make for a happy few weeks.

I knew, I'd be back, just a matter of time.

Thanks for any help guys!!

I"ll get moms cam tonight and take some pics, I have some concerns about the starters clutch. I need some of you guys to confirm or deny my assumptions and help me out, look for a post tomorrow or possibly tonight. Thanks guys!!

The idea "if it aint broke, dont fix it" Does usually apply. But this starter ISNT working. and if I have to split the tractor I will fix the stuff I can while I"m in there...

I just replaced the starter drive about 6 weeks ago on my 300u. I did not search real estensively, but purchased one from this site.

Jay: Some years ago both my SA and 130 had bad starters at the same time. I went to an auto electric shop I had dealt with for years. He advised he had all the parts needed except one starter drive. He could have me going that afternoon if I could find a second starter drive.

Off to the CaseIH dealer across town I went, and they had this clutch drive I'd never seen before. Back to the rebuilder and he was all done except this new starter drive. Home I went, now bear in mind both SA and 130 ring gears had seen better days. This new clutch drive worked great in both tractors. The new bendix would not work right in either tractor. I could get SA going after much grinding. It would not even turn the 130 over. I installed the a clutch drive from CaseIH and that ended the problem. The clutch drive engages much smoother, especially if the tractor has been changed to 12 volt. It will work on quite hard looking ring gears.

At that time it was available only at CaseIH. I hope it still is. I haven't needed any starter drives lately. Since being on discussion here at YT, I notice folks state side, don't interact much when I mention this clutch drive. I'm wondering if this may be a Canadian aftermarket item, being handled by CaseIH dealers in Canada. If you cant find one give me a shout, and I'll check here.

Hugh,

I bought one of those new style drives when I went through my H. It was just a few years ago, so they should still be available.

Greg: I was amazed at how well that clutch drive worked on my tractors. As I said in my earlier post neither of my ring gears looked great. That clutch drive works beautiful on those old ring gears. I think that was somewhere between 93 and 96, I installed those clutch drives. In 2001 I installed a new clutch assembly in my 130 and didn't bother to change that ring gear as the starter was and still is working perfectly. I still adhere to that old policy,"If it aint broke, don't fix it".

Hi Jay, the starter jambing in the ring gear was a standard feature of the 300U. When we bought a 300U new in 1957 the dealer's mechanic warned us about the problem and to always carry a wrench to loosen the starter mounting bolts.

I would recommend you get the flywheel resurfaced and while it's in the shop have them install a new rig gear.
To identify your parts, goto www.caseih.com and follow "Search for Parts"
Parts sources-- CaseIH, www.cngco.com , www.batescorp.com , click on "parts" at the top of this yt webpage. Once you get part numbers, you can "GOOGLE" the part numbers.
