B414 Still Won't Start !

I am still having the same problem with my B414. It will not start. I bought a new battery and solenoid and cleaned all connections. When I turn the key the solenoid makes a noise (buzzing or clicking but no turning over.I took off the cranking motor to see if it was stuck but every thing seems fine. What could be wrong?
The solenoid has four posts. There are two large posts for the power from the battery and one that goes to the cranking motor. There are two smaller posts. One is for the ground which is taped together with the power wire (same as all vehicles). The next post has a connection that I am not sure where it goes. This is not connected to anything. Could this be the problem?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

If it doesn't crank after doing what Fromjb2 suggested you should pull the starter and connect a battery to the starter. Then see if the starter
drive (bendix) is energized when you short across
(just touch) those small terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver. Keep your hands away from that starter drive when doing this.
If that starter drive doesn't move. You prbably need a new solenoid. Hal

we learned that when you replace a starter or remove it. the starter and the bellhousing should be clean metal to metal. my 2cents worth.

Have you tried actually running the starter when it's off the tractor? That should help determine whether you have a starter/wiring issue or something else. I'm also slightly confused as to how you have this wired up. Is the new solenoid exactly the same as the old one? The bit that's confusing me is the "One is for the ground which is taped together with the power wire (same as all vehicles)". Where in NS are you? I'm (usually) in Berwick down the valley. Hope this helps, tractorsam

It's a long shot but I had a tractor once that had the same symptoms, I replaced the starter with a brand new one and same thing. Turned out the previous owner had 20w50 oil in it, it was -20 degrees outside, and the engine was just too cold to turn over with the thick oil. Put a kersene heater on it and plugged the engine heater in and in a couple hours she cranked right over. Just a thought.

Hi Paul, is the B414 gas or Diesel. I assume it is gas because the Diesel model had a manual starter switch. I looked in the B414 Operator's Manual wiring diagram for petrol model and it only shows a 3 terminal starter solenoid.
The 2 big terminals for battery and starter, the other smaller terminal has 2 wires, 1 Brown wire(red sleeve) to terminal 3 of ignition switch, the other wire Brown going to Ammeter.

Since you replaced battery and cleaned cable connectors at both battery and solenoid then you could have a grounding problem at the battery. Quick simple test is turn on the head lights and attempt to start tractor. If lights go out or really dim then there is a grounding problem from battery to frame. The other problem that would happen on the early Diesel model starter was that the only ground for the starter was thru the end bearings of the starter. There was a ground post on the front of the starter that was never connected to ground. Later models had a ground strap connected from that post to one of the starter mounting bolts.

The other problem could be your ignition/starter switch being bad. Try this at YOUR OWN RISK. To test for this problem make sure tractor is in NEUTRAL and PARK BRAKE is ON, take a screw driver and short the small ignition switch terminal on the solenoid to the big battery terminal and starter should engage and spin the engine.

One other thought, did someone retrofit a clutch safety swicth on this B414?

Good luck
JimB
