Anyone know exactly what serial number scheme and starting point IH used. The Blue ribbon service manual gives the h4 xxx,xxx but dosen't show any ranges.

Obviously the 300,000 & 400,000 numbered mags don't correspond to physical tractors, but maybe only the last five digits really mean anything.

Any information helpful, thx.

When you consider that all models of A,B,H,M,W4,W6,W9 pluss all the engines that were on combines, balers, power units and then add the numbers would be over probably a million.

Yes but the others (W) etc. have their own prefix & suffix designations, and I've run across a 1941 H4 mag in the 389,xxx range which seems like a lot that early, even taking possible engines in account at that time. Unless they continued the numbering from the F20, F30s etc. but I doubt it.

I can't remember when they bought out the OEM supplier and started making the units under their own name.

Just a feeling that something eles going on in this serial assignment.

But been wrong more than once.

IH bought out Accurate Engineering around 1919, well before the H-4 entered into production in 1939. H-4s were used on all Letter sereis tractors on up except for Cubs- Magnetos used on Super W-6s were H-4s.

I suspect the H-4 serials start quite low and work up. I know the archives in Madison has some of the later H-4 monthly serial numbers, but I've never seen the earlier ones, never looked for them either.

By the end of 1941, IH had alread produced around 200,000 letter series tractors.
