The M and W 9 speed transmission for H, NOS in original box went for $860 on ebay.

Allthough it would have been a nice addition for my tractor, I just can't justify paying that kind of price. I use my H for actual farming on a working farm, and for that price I could come close to a good downpayment on a good used tractor.

Would have been nice to have seen this item go to a real farmer to be used for real farming like M W intended. Hell, it was probably bought by someone who makes $860 a day in interest just on his investments. Probably the closest he has ever come to "working the soil" is watching his butler power till the rose garden. I hate to see these farmer wannabes screw-up things for those of us who are still the "genuine article".

Sorry for the rant. Maybe I'm just disappointed and totally wrong about all this, but yet....

I have 4 M's three of them have 9speeds, Two of them are MandW one is Behlen, Behlen has the best gear speeds but they use a cable to shift. Heisler and MW both use hard linkage. I also have a Behlen for an H complete under my bench, not new but looks to be in good shape.Don't know if I will put it in my H or sell it. By the way a Behlen in an M gives you 7-9-12-15 mph speeds.

..and I do apologize. I guess I should have realized that some of the bidders could be contributors (and valuable contributors at that!) to this newsgroup, and have a legitimate interest in farming and rural things. And I guess its like any other auction fair and square. And it is an item that doesn't show up too often.

Having said that, there are lawyers, doctors, etc who are bidding things up like land (and things like this item on ebay), just because they have the $$$ and things that are rural and country are "cool" and trendy right now.

I'll just keep looking. Would really like to get my hands on an MW live clutch for my H. I put up lots of hay with my Allis-Chalmers roto baler, and baling 5000 bales/year requires alot of clutching with my ol' H.

A collector is a collector, it doesn't matter what their current profession is. I know many collectors that only have a "rural" connection due to their father or their grandfather having a tractor in the far distant past. I don't farm, and I have 10 tractors and 2 warehouses full of NOS parts, and both the tractors and parts are part of one big hobby. We need to be open to anyone that wants to be a part of this hobby.

I was the second bidder, and can assure you that it would not have gone in a tractor just because its value to M&W collectors is much greater than the value of the parts in a machine.

I am a real tractor enthusiast, and I have two H's and I bid it up to $700, so I don't think it was necessarily a shill bidder.

If I had the money I would have bid more, but what I bid was all the extra $$ I have at the moment... I personally have never seen an H or M with the 9-speed in person. It would be handy and make the H a useful raking tractor for me... oh well, as they say: better luck next time.

I won't point any fingers, or make any accusations because I really don't know, but can you say "shill bidder"?

If it truly did bring that much, it was because it was N.O.S., and still in the box, and probably will NOT be installed.

In recent years I have watched several Hs and Ms with the 9 speed attachment sell at farm and consignment auctions, and those tractors did not sell for any more money than a comparable tractor without the 9 speed. Keep your eyes open, and you might be able to pick up a complete tractor with the 9 speed, remove it and install on your tractor, sell the second tractor, and have the 9 speed basically free.
